Scope of Job:
Provides leadership, professional development, and supervision for academic advising staff while maintaining an advising student caseload. Analyzes data from currently adopted solutions to monitor and evaluate the progress of target student populations.


Description of Duties:
• Provides informative and collaborative academic advising for assigned student populations as well as assists Academic Advisors in complex cases.
• Teaches students strategies related to academic planning and monitoring, major selection, and academic success.
• Provides extensive and/or complex advising to assist students in self-evaluation and choosing a major in relation to their career and life goals.
• Manages the process of planning, implementing, and evaluating interventions for targeted populations.
• Supervises and mentors’ staff within their assigned area. Develops specialized trainings as needed.
• Collaborates with colleges and departments to develop advising tools and resources related to major selection, academic planning and academic success based on up-to-date degree plans and admission/graduation policies and criteria.
• Organizes and analyzes data from adopted technologies to monitor student progress toward completion.
• Develops, provides and coordinates presentations for orientations, trainings, university events and activities regarding academic advising, retention initiatives, mentoring and academic success.
• Maintains a working knowledge of best practices in advising for retention and timely progress to degree.
• Participates in professional development programming, assessment, and mentoring opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge in academic advisement and related fields.
• Coordinates special advising programs and initiatives.
• Performs other duties as assigned.


Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
Direct supervision of assigned staff.

Required Education:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university.

Preferred Education:
Master’s degree from an accredited university.

Licenses/Certifications:
None.

Required Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in academic advising or other closely related student service experience in a higher education setting.


Preferred Experience:
Experience leading teams of and/or initiatives in a higher education setting.


Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment.


Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Office Environment; some travel and weekend work is required. UTRGV is a distributed institution, which requires presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment across the Rio Grande Valley.


Other:
Ability to use computers for word processing, calendar sharing, emailing, accessing student academic information. Ability to successfully collaborate with faculty, administrators within higher education (i.e. college deans, department chairs, and other administrators, etc.) and professional staff. Strong written/verbal communication, collaboration and presentation skills. Ability to apply current university academic policies and procedures, current academic advisement practices, student academic monitoring and retention efforts. Ability to identify specific student needs and to refer students effectively to available resources. Able to read and interpret state guidelines.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
