Salve Regina University
Newport, Rhode Island
Salve Regina University seeks an agile, entrepreneurial, and creative leader to serve as Vice Provost, Graduate and Professional Studies. Established as an independent college in the Catholic tradition by the Sisters of Mercy in 1947, Salve Regina is a nationally recognized, highly selective, residential liberal arts university with a vibrant academic program that spans liberal education and professional preparation in a curriculum designed to encourage lifelong learners and responsible global citizens. One of 17 institutions of higher education founded by the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas, Salve Regina offers undergraduate and graduate programs to 2,800 undergraduate and graduate students. Salve Regina values academic excellence, community and collaboration, compassion, competence, belief in the dignity of each person, integrity, rigorous intellectual inquiry, service, social responsibility, and a spirit of hospitality and commitment to diversity. Located in the vibrant and historic city of Newport on Narragansett Bay, an area of stunning beauty and historical significance, Salve Regina sits on 75 acres in an historic district; preserving the historic character of its buildings has been a reflection of Salve Regina’s commitment to stewardship that is central to the Mercy mission.
At the graduate level, Salve Regina offers a range of interdisciplinary and professional programs built on a foundation of liberal arts and sciences. Currently there are ten masters’ programs with options for concentrations as well as three doctoral programs and specialty graduate certificates. All graduate and professional programs are fully online. Salve Regina serves about 600 graduate and professional students and 60 continuing education students. The Vice Provost will be charged to evaluate, strengthen, and launch new academic programs and offerings for students and employers and leverage all modalities to optimize enrollment and quality. This is an exciting opportunity to lead and advance a vision for graduate and professional education and training in a university committed to preparing men and women for responsible lives by imparting and expanding knowledge, developing skills, and cultivating enduring values.
Reporting to the Provost, the Vice Provost drives strategic and operational efforts to position Salve Regina as a leading provider of graduate and professional education for the New England region. The Vice Provost must understand how to sustain, deliver, support, create, and expand high quality academic and professional education programs in formats that meet the needs of traditional and nontraditional students and challenge them to achieve academic excellence. The Vice Provost leads the vision, strategy and tactical plan for graduate and professional studies and is accountable for financial analysis, forecasting, and achievement of revenue targets for this portfolio.
The university seeks an innovative and experienced academic leader of recognized accomplishment, vision, and intellectual breadth who has demonstrated a strong entrepreneurial and strategic bent. The Vice Provost will demonstrate excellent management and communications skills; an understanding of the adult learner market; a commitment to excellence; the ability to work imaginatively with a management team, faculty members, and administrative colleagues; and a drive to motivate others, to build, and to execute. An earned doctorate or terminal degree from an accredited institution is strongly preferred. Experience managing a P&L in higher education and/or industry is essential as is a vision for the education of adult learners and post-traditional students and an understanding of critical success factors driving innovative academic and professional programs.
Screening will begin in December and continue until an appointment is made. Nominations, inquiries, and applications (including a cover letter, CV, and the names of five references) should be directed electronically to [email protected].
