Job Summary/Basic Function:

Position Type: Temporary, Full-Time, Non-Benefit Eligible, 4-Month Appointment

This temporary 4-month raptor research technician position starting in early March 2021 will work full-time in the Raptor Research Center at Boise State University to execute surveys focused on cliff-nesting raptors in the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (NCA), Idaho. The surveys will focus on finding nests of Prairie Falcons but crews should expect to see and record nests of Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks, Swainson’s Hawks, Ferruginous Hawks, Common Ravens, Barn Owls, and other birds of prey species. Surveys will involve vehicle travel (including off-road), extensive hiking, some boat travel, and potentially occasional camping as needed.

Housing for these positions is NOT provided so will be the responsibility of the individuals hired.

Essential Functions:

As a project crew member, research technicians will execute field survey protocols in the NCA and enter, validate, and archive survey data and other project information. We seek up to 10 individuals with good field skills and experience identifying western North American raptors.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

● Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

Minimum Qualifications:

Some knowledge of: scientific methods.

Experience: data collection and compilation; in database manipulation; researching using various sources.

Preferred Qualifications:

• College degree in biology, wildlife biology, natural resources, or related field
• Computer skills including word processing and databasing
• Ability to collect detailed records in organized fashion
• Comfortable with long field days and occasional overnight camping
• Working knowledge of use of handheld GPS and GIS software
• Ability to use maps and GIS/GPS to navigate in field settings
• Safe driving record and ability to drive 4WD vehicles
• Experience operating boats and UTVs, and towing/loading trailers
• Raptor identification
• Experience surveying for cliff-nesting raptors
• Experience working in the NCA

Salary:

Starting rate of $17.00 per hour
