Job Description:

The Director of Residence Life is responsible for the residence life program for a diverse residential population of more than 1,100 students. This position reports to the Dean of Student Affairs. The Director provides leadership and supervision to an Associate Director and five graduate assistants.

A passionate and creative Director of Residence Life will function as a key strategist and thought-partner as the college continues to evolve. This position provides leadership and overall supervision of the College’s Residence Life program. The residential experience at the college is a significant part of the overall student experience and integrated into the fabric of the college’s retention efforts. The Director will be responsible for the administrative operation including occupancy management, supervision, and policy development. Additionally, the Director must be capable of creating a strategic vision for residential communities fully integrated into the academic, social, wellness and health of the overall campus.

As a member of the Sarah Lawrence College community, the Director is part of a college-wide effort that is focused on providing an inclusive environment that is student-centered.

Essential Duties Summary:

•Responsible for the planning and implementing a comprehensive residential education and community building program which is responsive to the needs of resident students
•Recruit, select, train, and evaluate professional and paraprofessional residence hall staff, including the Associate Director of Residence Life and five graduate staff.
•Participate in on-call duty rotation for nights and weekends and serve as a member of the on-call team.
•Respond to crisis situations; assess and refer at-risk students for additional intervention by appropriate personnel
•Serve on the CARE Team
•Serve as the primary contact point to address student and parent issues and resolve them in a satisfactory manner
•Serve as the primary conduct officer for residence based behavioral violations.
•Develop proactive policies, procedures and initiatives
•Direct and manage opening, closing, and break housing plans for the residence halls
•Communicate frequently with the Director of Facilities to monitor residence hall maintenance, housing facilities issues and improvements. Work with Director on project timing, communication with students and families and identifying needs in the halls
•Develop and update a comprehensive communication plan about department processes and procedures for the print and digital platforms
•Manage with the assistance of the Associate Director with the housing selection and assignment processes
•Manages assessment efforts and establishes departmental learning outcomes and implementation strategies and assesses student satisfaction with the residential experience.
•Serve on various college-wide committees
•Collaborate with various campus constituents and support major college sponsored events including orientation, perspective and admitted student days, and other student engagement large scale events.
•Act in the place of the Dean of Student Affairs when the Dean is not available

Required Qualifications:

A master’s degree in higher education with 5-6 years of progressive experience in Residence Life and supervision experience with undergraduate and graduate staff. Have the ability to work effectively under pressure, flexibility, initiative, critical thinking, strong organizational skills, good oral and written communication skills, able to provide effective, people-centered support services, positivity and able to work with a diverse student population. The ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, to students, parents, faculty, and staff with demonstrated skill in problem-solving, efficient and effective decision-making, and conflict resolution. Strong and diligent attention to detail and ability to successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously is required. Must possess excellent working knowledge in a variety of computer programs (Excel, Google products, data management systems) and have an understanding of creative ways to implement technology. Candidate must be able and willing to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends as necessary.
