THE ASSISTANT VICE PRESIDENT FOR DEVELOPMENT AND ALUMNI RELATIONS will be a polished professional who knows and understands the nature and purpose of public higher education development and alumni relations. Reporting to the Vice President for Institutional Advancement, the Assistant Vice President will oversee all central fundraising programs, including alumni relations, annual giving, prospect research, donor relations and stewardship, gift planning, corporate and foundation relations, major gifts, and school- and college-based development programs.

ABOUT THE COLLEGE

Founded in 1903, Albany State University is a member institution of the University System of Georgia. ASU is among the nation’s top Historically Black Colleges and Universities and is the largest HBCU in Georgia and offers 13 certificates, 14 associate, 30 baccalaureate, and 12 graduate degrees across 60 programs.

Albany State University had a higher enrollment for the fall 2020 semester, with an increase of nearly 6% from 2019. Under President Marion Ross Fedrick’s leadership, the University implemented strategic scholarship allocations, recruitment strategies, and student success programs that have led to this achievement.

The ASU student body consists of both traditional and non-traditional students who number nearly 6,500 on campus. Ninety-three percent of ASU students come from Georgia communities, primarily Atlanta and Southwest and Central Georgia. The average student age is 24 and about 40 percent of the students live in on-campus housing.

The University fields a total of 4 men’s and 7 women’s NCAA Division II intercollegiate sports and is a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). The Golden Rams have won several regional and national athletic championships.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES  AND COMPETENCIES

The Assistant Vice President will help create a more holistic, strategic, and thoughtful approach to the development and alumni relations function of the University. As a key member of the Division of Institutional Advancement, the Assistant Vice President will play an important role in helping Albany State University prepare and launch a transformative and comprehensive fundraising campaign.

The following positions report directly to the Assistant Vice President: Director of Development, Director of Annual Giving, Prospect Research Coordinator, Alumni Relations Coordinator, Director of Development for Athletics, Prospect Research Coordinator, Donor Relations and Stewardship Coordinator, and Community and Alumni Engagement Coordinator.

The Assistant Vice President manages, leads, and directs the day-to-day operations of the overall fundraising, alumni, and donor engagement strategy in support of advancing the University’s mission and strategic plan. This includes annual, major, and planned gift cultivation and solicitation, corporate and foundation support, and comprehensive campaigns.

Additional directives

  • Works with the Vice President for Institutional Advancement to define and articulate the image and priorities of the University.
  • Manages and cultivates a personal portfolio of major gift prospects and provides guidance to the President and Vice President for managing their personal portfolio of major gift prospects.
  • Supervises personnel and identifies strategies to continuously improve individual and departmental performance and outcomes.
  • Collaborates effectively with Albany State University Foundation on fundraising initiatives.
  • Establishes strong relationships with corporate leaders, government officials, donors, alumni, and the advancement community in the interest of gaining knowledge and resources to support ASU’s mission.
  • Completes all other tasks as assigned by the Vice President for Institutional Advancement and the President of the University.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related area
  • Five to ten years of progressively responsible experience directly related to fundraising and alumni relations
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills
  • A successful record in managing or participating in fundraising programs and soliciting funds from individuals, corporations, and foundations
  • A working knowledge of advancement technology systems
  • The ability to balance multiple priorities in a fast-paced and complex environment and work evenings and weekend and travel as required
  • The ability to work collaboratively with all members of the University community
