Marine Mammal Stranding Technician

Coastal Carolina University is accepting applications for the following position: Marine Mammal Stranding Technician in the Department of Marine Science. This position performs laboratory and fieldwork related to marine mammal strandings in South Carolina. The position will be primarily based in Charleston, SC, and will work closely with the Marine Mammal Strandings and Life History Program at the National Ocean Service Laboratory in Charleston.
Position is a full time grant funded position with benefits. The position is funded by a federal grant. Salary is competitive and position begins as soon as January 4, 2021.

Duties include, but are not limited to: coordinate and oversee the retrieval of dead stranded marine mammals, the collection of Level A data, performance of necropsies either in the field or in the lab, and the disposal of the carcass; oversee the response to live stranded marine mammals, including coordination with NOAA and local officials and veterinarians, and providing on-site educational briefings to the public; coordinate/train South Carolina Marine Mammal Stranding Network volunteers; assist in the preparation and archiving of marine mammal tissues and skeletal materials; assist with research efforts involving tissues or data from South Carolina marine mammal strandings; support educational and public outreach efforts through formal and informal presentations to the public, students, researchers, and/or websites/publications; and perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements: A bachelor’s degree in marine or biological sciences or a related field from an accredited institution is required. Knowledge of life history methods and marine mammal anatomy, necropsy experience, and experience with the SC Marine Mammal Stranding Network is preferred. Must be available to be on call and work on weekdays, weekends, holidays, and odd hours to respond to marine mammal strandings. Must be able to work in physically demanding situations and adverse weather conditions, able to lift 50 lbs. Must possess good communication skills and data entry/computer skills.

Required Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in marine or biological sciences or a related field from an accredited institution.

Required Licensure and/or Certification:

Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Good oral and written communication skills. Computer skills (word processing, Excel, Powerpoint, data entry for databases). Knowledge of small boat operation or willingness to learn. Knowledge of life history methods and marine mammal anatomy, necropsy experience, and experience with the SC marine mammal stranding network are preferred.

Additional comments regarding this position:

Able to be on call and work weekends, holidays, and odd hours, in addition to weekdays, to respond to marine mammal strandings.

Location: The position will be primarily based in Charleston, SC, at the NOAA National Ocean Service Center for Coastal Environmental Health and Biomolecular Research (CCEHBR), in the Coastal Marine Mammal Assessment Program.

Reporting: The position will report to Dr. Rob Young in the Department of Marine Science and will be administratively housed in that department. Mr. Wayne McFee will help to coordinate on-site activities at CCEHBR and will coordinate with Dr. Young. An MOU is attached documenting the collaborative relationship between CCEHBR/McFee and CCU/Young.
