The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the center of a world-class liberal arts education at Stanford University. H&S encompasses 23 departments—from Art and Art History, English, and History to Economics, Mathematics, and Biology—as well as 23 interdisciplinary programs. The Bill Lane Center for the American West is dedicated to advancing scholarly and public understanding of the past, present, and future of western North America. The Center supports research, teaching, and reporting about western land and life in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

The Center's vision of the West extends from San Francisco Bay to the fabled 100th Meridian, from western Canada to all of Mexico, and outward to the Pacific world. As a hub for research and expertise about the American West, we work with Stanford students, faculty, and outside partners to address challenges facing the region. One of our main objectives is to provide helpful tools, reporting and research to leaders who make decisions that impact California and the American West. In addition to supporting sound policymaking, we also strive to showcase the art, history and culture of the West to preserve and foster appreciation for the region's uniqueness. The Center's work is highly interdisciplinary and involves numerous partnerships both on and off-campus.

The Bill Lane Center is searching for a Program Manager to manage the Center. Reporting to the Faculty Director, the Program Manager provides comprehensive administrative management of the Center, responsible for finance, HR, IT and other operational decision making needs for the Center. Additional key responsibilities include direct management of staff, student and temporary employees, and translating the faculty director's research and programmatic goals into the daily work of the staff; managing donor and Advisory Council relations, including managing the staffing of the advisory council, ongoing donor stewardship of one time and endowment gifts, and serve as a liaison to the Office of Development; establish, monitor and execute the Center's external communications strategy, and other special projects as directed by the faculty director, Advisory Council or other on campus partners. This is an exciting and innovative opportunity to participate in initiatives that span all seven Stanford schools, the Dean of Research, and Hoover Institution to support faculty and students in the department.

In this role, you will:
  • Lead the planning and operations for programs or functions that have significant business, regulatory and/or technical challenges requiring subject matter expertise.
  • Evaluate programs or functions, policies and procedures. Identify issues, and develop alternative solutions which may include changes to programs, policies and procedures.
  • Review and analyze trends to advise and develop recommendations to achieve or modify the goals of the program or function.
  • Represent the program or function within the department, unit or school by committing resources and provide information and/or training. Represent the program or function at the university level and/or to external/internal stakeholders and constituencies.
  • Manage and contribute e to the development of outreach strategy that may include relationship development, communications and compliance.
  • May develop and/or oversee budgets; manage finances including monitoring, analyzing, forecasting, and reporting.
  • Assess training needs and may develop associated training.
  • May direct and/or supervise staff.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish priorities, manage shifting priorities, and handle numerous time-sensitive projects with multiple deadlines.
  • Ability to accomplish goals working through formal and informal channels, with diplomacy and tactfulness.
  • Demonstrated creativity, problem solving, critical analysis, initiative, judgment and, decision-making skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and meet budget goals.
  • Demonstrated solid planning and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong relevant subject matter knowledge.
  • Ability to direct the work of others, for jobs requiring supervision.

  • Warmth, conscientiousness, a sense of humor and ties to the Western region
  • Respect for successful workflow and routines that the current team has already established, and an openness to problem-solving in collaboration with other BLC staff.
  • Adaptability and sensitivity to changing needs of staff, stakeholders and partners, particularly during the COVID pandemic
