Position Summary:

The Research Project Manager will provide significant contribution to and management of research development activities, which are primarily focused on measuring the impact of cancer and its treatments on patients’ lives. This includes an evaluation of their quality of care, health outcomes, quality of life, functioning, symptom profile, financial toxicity and satisfaction with medical care. Project management responsibilities include, but are not limited to the management of day-to-day operations, project development, managing IRB (institutional review board) applications; monitoring adherence to protocols, keeping records of research activities and quality control across a variety of platforms. The position will also be responsible for the management of grant budgets, interfacing with business office personnel, assuring timeline and appropriate spending of grant funds, making budgetary recommendations and contract negotiations. The position will require capacity to coordinate multiple concurrent tasks, and will interface with a multidisciplinary team, including graduate students, biostatisticians, epidemiologists, oncologists, public health professionals, and other research and administrative staff. This position will collaborate with investigators across multiple departments, centers, and schools at UNC and elsewhere. Further, the position will have some interaction with research study participants to collect qualitative and quantitative data. Finally, the Research Associate will be asked to conduct basic qualitative and quantitative data analyses.

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s preferred in Public Health, Psychology, Sociology, or a related field.

Qualifications and Experience:

Requires 5+ years experience in research-related field, as well as experience with independently managing research including establishing operating design, quality assurance and business operations including comprehensive budget management. Must possess excellent organizational skills, strong written and verbal communication skills, inherent self-motivation, demonstrated capacity for working independently and engaging in innovative problem-solving, and ability to work productively in a collaborative and multidisciplinary environment. Requires dedication to research on access to cancer care, quality of cancer care, and the quality of life of individuals diagnosed with cancer. Also required is the ability to orient other personnel in data collection and quality control techniques, and to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, physicians, researchers, managers, representatives of other agencies/facilities, and the public.
Preference will be given to the candidate with the following relevant experience: managing multi-site or multidisciplinary research projects; interviewing research participants with a medical diagnosis or chronic illness; conducting literature reviews; grant writing; analyzing qualitative data using Atlas or similar software; analyzing quantitative data using Stata or SAS; preparing reports to funding agencies, including the National Institutes of Health; preparing and managing research budgets; preparing and submitting manuscripts for publication; preparing reports and applications to institutional review boards (IRBs), and in-depth knowledge of and facility with Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook Calendar, and Endnote.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers.
