Position: Associate Researcher - The Division of Health Policy and Management, School of Public Health
Location: University of California, Berkeley, CA
Salary: $108,100.00 to $114,500.00
Start Date: January 2021

The Division of Health Policy and Management in the School of Public Health at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for an Associate Professional Researcher, Step III to IV at an annual salary of $108,100 to $114,500, in the area of healthcare organization and management research, at 75% time with an expected start date of January 2021.

The Center for Lean Engagement and Research's mission is to conduct and disseminate research on the implementation of Lean management practices in healthcare organizations and the relationships between Lean management and health organization performance measures including profitability, efficiency, staff work satisfaction, health outcomes, and patient satisfaction. The job duties and responsibilities of this position will include serving as the Director of the Center for Lean Engagement and Research (CLEAR) in Healthcare and leading the work performed by CLEAR's staff to fulfill the Center's mission. The Director of CLEAR is responsible for setting the Center's research agenda and, in collaboration with others, preparing research proposals for external funding of research projects. This involves compiling primary and secondary data from multiple sources such as the American Hospital Association Annual Survey and CMS Medicare Hospital Compare and collecting organizational data from relevant ambulatory and inpatient facilities. The Associate Professional Researcher/CLEAR Director will perform qualitative and quantitative data analyses as appropriate for relevant studies and oversee the research work of CLEAR staff. The Associate Professional Researcher/CLEAR Director will author or co-author manuscripts reporting study findings that will be submitted for publication to appropriate academic and professional journals. As CLEAR Director, the Associate Professional Researcher will regularly communicate with CLEAR's Strategic Advisory Council and Research Advisory Committee to seek insights about current developments with respect to Lean management in healthcare organizations and advice regarding CLEAR's research activities. The Director will also maintain working relationships with the representatives of each organizational member of CLEAR's Lean Action Research Learning Collaborative, a group of healthcare organizations that have joined together with CLEAR to conduct research on topics of interest to their ongoing Lean-related performance improvement efforts. The Associate Professional Researcher/Center Director will be responsible for organizing and implementing an annual Lean Healthcare Research Symposium featuring the research conducted at CLEAR and recent research conducted by other analysts.

Basic qualifications (required at the time of application)
  • Ph.D. (or equivalent international degree)

Additional qualifications (must be met by the start date)
  • Minimum of five years' experience in conducting research on Lean management and performance improvement in health care organizations
  • Evidence of publications in peer-reviewed journals on the Lean management system and performance improvement in healthcare organizations

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Health Policy and Management, Health Services Research or equivalent area of specialization (or equivalent doctoral-level advanced degree in these or related areas of specialization )
  • Experience in writing successful healthcare performance improvement research grant proposals to federal or private sector funding sources
  • Experience in using quantitative and qualitative research methods
  • Experience working with large data sets and merging data sets for analysis
  • Excellent interpersonal skills needed for successful collaborations with clinicians, managers, and leaders of healthcare organizations throughout the United States and internationally
  • Excellent verbal and written communication
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Prior or current supervising experience
  • Five years of experience in conducting Lean research in healthcare
  • Experience in working within an organization that has implemented the Lean management system

Salary range for Associate Researcher at step III and IV is $108,100 and $114,500
