The Department of Theology in the College of Arts and Sciences at Loyola University Chicago (LUC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, for academic year 2021-22. The department seeks applicants with expertise in systematic or historical theology, conversant in the medieval, reformation, or early modern periods with an emphasis on contextual theologies of race, gender, or post-colonial theory. The department serves the university’s undergraduate core curriculum and offers undergraduate majors and minors in Theology and Religious Studies. The department also offers an M.A. in Biblical Languages and Literature, Christian Ethics, and Theological Studies, and Ph.D. concentrations in New Testament/Early Christianity, Ethics, and Theology. The successful candidate will be joining a department with 28 full-time faculty members, approximately 50 undergraduate majors and minors, and 50 graduate students. This search is part of a University-wide, multi-year hiring initiative designed to hire outstanding researchers and teachers who are reflective of our diverse student body and committed to interdisciplinarity (i.e., working with colleagues across different subfields and disciplines) and the pursuit of external grants. Of special interest are candidates who can further the University’s efforts to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Candidates should be prepared to teach a variety of graduate and undergraduate courses that serve the department’s diverse multi-cultural and multi-religious student body, as well as the Jesuit students in the First Studies program. This faculty member will teach undergraduate core courses (Introduction to Theology as well as Christianity through Time), an upper-level undergraduate sequence of courses on the history of Christian thought, as well as graduate-level seminars in their areas of historical and theoretical expertise. The successful candidate is expected to pursue a strong research program, including the pursuit of external grants.

The candidate will have a Ph.D. in systematic theology or historical (medieval, reformation, or early modern periods) theology at the time of appointment. Experience teaching or conducting research in the specialty areas of race, gender, or post-colonial theory is desirable. Candidates for the position must clearly demonstrate the potential for excellence in research and teaching and have a record of (or clear potential for) distinguished scholarship, grant-funded research, and student mentorship. The candidate should be willing to support the mission of LUC and the goals of a Jesuit Catholic Education.
