Position Summary::

The Department of Gender and Race Studies seeks a non-tenure track renewable contract Assistant Professor of Women’s Studies. This is a full time teaching appointment requiring extensive experience in the program and curricular needs of a Department of Women’s Studies. The appointment is for three years, and this appointment carries the opportunity for renewal and promotion to Associate Professor and Professor.

The Department of Gender and Race Studies at the University of Alabama is seeking to fill a position at the level of non tenure renewable contract (clinical) assistant professor. This position qualifies for successive promotion without tenure, and is a full time teaching position (4/4). The Department is looking for someone who has extensive experience developing and maintaining an online course program, as well as the demonstrated capacity to teach courses at the graduate and undergraduate level in gender, race, and rhetoric. A qualified applicant will be able to manage the Department’s online program of courses teaching more than 4000 students a year, managing the needs of teachers and students in the online program. The successful applicant will also provide mentorship and training for graduate student teaching instructors.

The applicant should be able to provide teaching that addresses the question of how women in the South define their own personal ambitions in the context of existing feminist movements for gender equity and justice, and how specific approaches to the study of pedagogy and rhetoric are used by women in the South to achieve success. The applicant should have an interest in the role of conservative social environments in the development of feminist understandings of gender in the South.

The applicant should be an expert in multiple areas of research in feminist critical pedagogy, with a focus on alternative modes of instruction, and should have extensive knowledge of how gender and feminist pedagogy are described in both secondary and university educational environments in the Southern US. The applicant should be able to demonstrate a thorough understanding of conservative social philosophy as it describes specific issues of Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

The ideal candidate would have a PhD in Rhetoric and Composition, and have a research focus in Southern lives and feminist pedagogy. Additional weight would be given to someone whose research focus included the description of gender and feminist practices within evangelical Christianity, and extensive knowledge of the relationship between Southern conservative movements and contemporary feminist movements. They would be able to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses in advanced feminist pedagogy, seminars on the study of race, women, and the church, and research seminars on the description of Women’s private lives and counter publics.
