Primary Purpose of Department:

The mission of the Department of Special Education and Child Development is to prepare highly effective and ethical professionals who have a positive impact on children, youth, families, community, and schools and who are successful in urban and other diverse settings. This mission is accomplished through teaching, research, and community engagement that lead to improved practice and by working in partnership with schools, communities, and university colleagues.

Primary Purpose of Position:

The employee will carry out technical assistance regarding the inclusion of students with significant cognitive disabilities by following implementation science models to build district, school, and teacher capacity. Specifically, the RA will conduct literature reviews, develop support materials, facilitate PLCs and lead coaching sessions with mentors and classroom teachers. The TA Center is funded by the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP), Department of Education. We will function as a subcontract within the larger cooperative agreement that was awarded to the University of Minnesota (NCEO).

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

The employee will report to Dr. Shawnee Wakeman and will be a senior member of the TIES Center UNCC group, providing project support and working in collaboration with other team members. The employee’s principal responsibilities will be to work with a dynamic team to provide technical assistance and conduct research involving the inclusion of students with disabilities in general education classrooms and schools. The research associate will follow implementation science models to run Professional Learning Communities related to inclusive practices for teachers including the provision of coaching to selected teachers and district mentors within intensive TA sites. The research associate will provide Wiki and webinar support to project staff at UNCC and other institutions related to evidence based practices to facilitate inclusive opportunities and instruction for students with disabilities. Additionally, the research associate will disseminate to a national audience and manage the daily operations of the instructional components of the TA efforts. The employee will confer with Dr. Wakeman and Dr. Claudia Flowers on overall direction, strategy and general project management issues but will exercise a considerable amount of independent judgement and original thinking in support of technical assistance and research that contributes to original knowledge and advances the University’s reputation in service and research. The employee will participate in other professional activities as assigned.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Completed Ph.D. (preferred) or earned master’s degree with some completion of some of a Ph.D. program in Special Education specializing the in the instruction and assessment of students with low incidence disabilities.
