Texas Lutheran University invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position as University Librarian, starting Summer 2021. The University Librarian is the director of the Blumberg Memorial Library.

This position follows a 12-month schedule and will be filled at either the Assistant Professor or the Associate Professor level, commensurate with experience. In service of the university’s mission to empower a diverse student body through an education centered on the liberal arts and professional programs, the University Librarian will provide vision and leadership for the Texas Lutheran University library. This position will:

  • Foster development and maintenance of library resources and services to meet the needs of all academic programs
  • Develop and implement library policies and procedures for services that focus on student-centered excellence in the university community
  • Coordinate library planning and assessment, including program reviews, accreditation efforts, support of new programs, and other short- and long-range projects
  • Oversee the library budget and assist in fundraising and grant-writing efforts to enhance library programs
  • Manage library facility use and development
  • Serve as chair of the library faculty and supervisor to the library staff.

We seek candidates with the following requirements:

  • Master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association, or international equivalent
  • At least three years of experience in academic librarianship
  • Demonstrated skills in leadership and personnel management
  • Demonstrated experience with budget management
  • Willingness and ability to teach occasional semester-long courses
  • Knowledge of both traditional and emerging academic library services, including public services, technical services, instructional technology, and Open Educational Resources
  • Ability to plan and execute changes and enhancements to the library program in response to new academic programs, patron needs, or assessment findings
  • Commitment to fostering a culture that supports diverse student populations and first-generation college students
  • Commitment to staying current with developments in the field of library and information science, participating in professional organizations, and interacting with state, local, and national government bodies regarding issues affecting libraries
  • Commitment to excellence in the six areas defined for faculty advancement and tenure (teaching, scholarship/professional development, advising, service to the university and community, leadership, and collegiality)
  • Commitment to collaboration with a variety of entities across campus, in the local community, and in professional organizations
  • Commitment to forward-thinking planning and anticipating challenges
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Clear vision of the role of the academic library at a small, private university
  • Understanding and support of the mission of Texas Lutheran University

Preference may be given to candidates who, in addition to meeting the above requirements, also offer one or more of the following:

  • Additional graduate degree
  • Experience in academic library administration
  • A record of research and publishing in the field
  • Proficiency in Spanish

Blumberg Memorial Library has a collection of over 387,000 library items in both physical and digital formats and provides access to over 50,000 journal and other periodical titles through online and print subscriptions. The library has active library instruction and instructional technology training programs that last year reached over 800 students, faculty, and staff. The library is an active member of the TexShare state-wide library consortium, the San Antonio area Council of Research and Academic Libraries (CORAL), the Texas Council of Academic Libraries (TCAL), and OCLC.
