The Interdepartmental Program in the Study of Religion at the University of California, Los Angeles is seeking a part-time Lecturer to teach one course on the Bible and Social Justice during the Winter 2021 academic quarter. This course focuses on how 20th and 21st century justice movements have appropriated the Bible and investigates the ambiguous role it plays in society, both liberatory and oppressive.
Applicants must have a PhD in Religions Studies or related fields, and should have experience teaching in a university setting. The ideal candidate should have an interdisciplinary approach to major topics in study of religion, such as religion and science, religion and society, politics, mysticism, ideas of revelation, scripture, myth and religion, worship and ritual. The candidate should also be familiar with U.S. social movements during the 20th and 21st century, and be acquainted with texts by James Baldwin, Traci Blackmon, James Cone, Susannah Heschel, and others.
