About the Position:

The David Rumsey Map Center and Stanford Libraries is seeking a full-time Center Services Supervisor. The Center is a state-of-the-art facility that collocates physical cartographic items and their digital surrogates allowing researchers to display and interrogate them in multiple ways adding unique value to the scholarship of cartographic material. The Center boasts large high-resolution video walls, a touch screen and Oculus rifts as well and a flexible space to support its programs and has one of the highest number of maps available online in high resolution in the world. The Center's collections include the David Rumsey Map Collection, Maps of Africa, Glen McLaughlin's collection of Maps of California as an Island, and other historic maps and atlases. In addition to being a teaching and event space, the Center has large areas to display maps and atlases in which two map related exhibitions are mounted a year. The Center is deeply engaged in collecting, cataloging, scanning, and providing access to the rare physical items and its digital collections in interesting and innovative ways

Job Purpose:

The Center Services Supervisor of the David Rumsey Map Center will manage the day-to-day operations of the Center, storage space (West 7) and all spaces within the Center. S/he will support library staff in maintaining the Center's video wall technology. The position requires an individual with a technical background in maintaining and troubleshooting technology and an ability to write complex documentation for procedures. The Center Services Supervisor will apply a problem-solving approach to changes, as well as an ability to adapt to a changing environment, including the current COVID-19 and post COVID-19 environment.

CORE DUTIES:

  • Supervise the operations of a library unit including supervision of lower level staff.


  • Monitor Center shelves, map drawers and stack maintenance and supervise work planning and supervising the work associated with collection shifts and transfer of materials; analyze and monitor space utilization of the Center; monitor center and material use statistics.


  • Perform and train other staff on routine circulation functions such as charges, discharges, and holds; staff and maintain the reference/circulation desk schedule.


  • Perform security checks as well as opening and closing activities.


  • Give first level of technical support within the Center including staff computers and user-facing screens and virtual reality equipment.


  • Support other library staff for technical troubleshooting for video walls, working jointly with Stanford Libraries Technical Support and then vendors, particularly Cinemassive to solve any problems.


  • Conducts and monitors purchases for the center and other financial transactions related to the center's program using Stanford's Oracle system.


  • Facilitate the receipt and shipment of Center materials, both within and outside the libraries.


  • Serve as liaison to the facilities department.


  • Other duties as assigned.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

  • Two-year college degree plus three or more years of experience in an academic library, or a combination of education and relevant experience.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of complex, information systems.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience using judgment and initiative to analyze and recommend new procedures.


Other Relevant Experience May Include:

  • Libraries or museums focusing on special collections or rare materials.
  • Technical expertise in video walls and virtual and augmented reality equipment and functions.
  • Familiarity with SirsiDynix Symphony and the Stanford financial and timecard systems.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google software suite and other widely used office computer applications.
  • Well versed in both Windows and Mac operating systems


Physical Requirements*:

  • Constantly sit, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, reach/work above shoulders, writing by hand.
  • Rarely use a telephone, kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), operate hand controls.
  • Must be able to push and maneuver a fully loaded cart weighing up to 650 pounds that requires an initial push force up to 70 pounds.

Working Conditions:
