Primary Function of Organizational Unit :

The postdoctoral scholar is responsible for independent and collaborative development, implementation, and analysis of scientific research and engagement projects in the discipline of marine science, geography, environmental science, or a related field. Responsibilities include management of all aspects of assisting with data analysis of existing research projects, generating original ideas for new, interdisciplinary research, working with large, multi-layered data sets and programs (e.g. Remote Sensing and GIS), and contributing to the growth of interdisciplinary units at ECU: The Integrated Coastal Studies Program, which focuses on issues related to the continental margin resources, natural hazards, and coastal and marine health.

Job Duties :

Duties include: hypothesis development, literature review, collection of pilot data, report writing, and supervising of undergraduate research students and graduate research students, overseeing data collection procedures, supervising experimental procedures, review of data for quality control, supervision of data entry/data analysis, analysis of research hypothesis using descriptive and multivariate statistics, and the development of independent and collaborative presentations and publications. Specific duties include: developing and contributing to ongoing research agendas at ECU and the Coastal Studies Institute, assisting with intramural and extramural white papers, proposals and progress reports, and coordinating and convening meetings with research members. In addition, the scholar will need to conduct ecogeoscientific research, including data collection and analysis using remotely sensed imagery and geospatial data. Knowledge and ability to conduct scientific literature review of ecological, coastal, and geological research are critical as well as the ability to perform analyses with Remote Sensing (optical and lidar), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Python and/or other programming languages or image processing softwares. Other duties will include international fieldwork and data collection in West Africa. Scholars will also interact with the Vice Chancellor, Associate and Assistant Vice Chancellors, and Directors in the Division of Research, Economic Development and Engagement. Scholars are expected to demonstrate compliance with established guidelines and regulatory standards for research including expenditures, biosafety, and responsible conduct of research and human subjects training. Approximately 75% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to field work, data collection, data processing, data analysis, and writing up of results. Approximately 25% of the postdoctoral scholar’s time will be devoted to managing the day-to-day activity of undergraduate and graduate research students in the laboratory.

Minimum Education/Experience :

English Proficiency
Excellent written and oral communication skills
PhD in marine science, geography, environmental science, or a related field.
Expertise with Remote Sensing and GIS

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation :

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education :

Research experience in the social, natural, or multidisciplinary sciences, with familiarity with theories and methods that address contemporary social and environmental problems affecting coastal and marine environments and water resources. A track record of applying for and securing external funding. Experience working in multidisciplinary research environments and with programming languages (python, C++, Java, etc.) a plus. Familiarity with fieldwork in coastal wetlands and West Africa are preferred.

Must be able to work in harsh, wet conditions while carrying equipment and instruments.
