Job Summary

The Mafu Lab, in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, is broadly interested in natural product biochemistry in both plants and fungi focusing on biosynthetic pathway elucidation, chemical biology and understanding the roles of metabolites in the biological system. Under the general supervision of Dr. Sibongile Mafu, the prospective postdoc will advance existing projects and be free to identify mutually agreed on new topics for development. The goal is to ensure preparedness and competitiveness of the postdoc for advancement to a next career phase through scientific growth, opportunities to present at national and international meetings, and publishing research findings. The position will also include support to attend scientific and/or professional development workshops consistent with advancing the individual’s career goals.

Essential Functions

Examples of duties:

  • To be engaged in all aspects of planning and carrying out research, including designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data.
  • Mentor and help with technical training of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Maintain laboratory equipment as is applicable.
  • Write reports and/or papers on completed research in cooperation with the PI.
  • Participate and present research results to lab members, in department colloquia, and to professional groups.

Other Functions

  • Work collaboratively and effectively to promote teamwork, diversity, equality and inclusiveness.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues within the CNS community and across the campus to support the Dean’s strategic priorities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the mission and goals of the College of Natural Sciences.
  • Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    • PhD required in the field of Biochemistry, Chemistry or closely related field.
    • Different methodologies are involved from the inception to the publication of the ongoing research. The position is suited for a researcher with demonstrated ability and willingness to learn/adopt new knowledge in functions listed below and shows evidence of ability to conduct experiments independently. Expertise in one or more of the following is required.
      • Heterologous expression of enzymes in different in vivo systems. Skills involve gene cloning, choice of appropriate methods of expression, and recombinant protein purification and analysis.
      • Knowledge and familiarity of analytical techniques necessary for structural determination of small molecules (GC/LC-MS, HPLC & NMR).
      • Familiarity with bioinformatics, such that the individual can either lead or contribute to the discussion and design of research that requires analysis using large databases.
    • A record of scholarly achievement as evidenced by publications in peer reviewed journals and presentation of research at national or international meetings.
    • Intellectual curiosity and initiative to develop new methodologies.
    • Strong communication and reporting skills are essential.

    Physical Demands/Working Conditions

    Ability to work in a lab environment.

    Work Schedule

    40 hours per week – flexible schedule.

    Salary Information

    Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be consistent with the postdoctoral bargaining unit contract.
