The College of Social Sciences seeks three professional Coordinator / Recruiters for our autonomous diversity studies programs: Africana Studies, American Indian Studies, and Chicanx Studies.

We are proud to be filling three individual professional-level positions to support each of our autonomous diversity studies programs! We have realized growth in enrollments in our programs, and recognize the importance of making this long-term commitment to foster diversity and inclusion as well as to provide the highest level of services to benefit our students.

Summary of Position Responsibilities

Primary areas of responsibility for these positions include: recruiting new students, providing guidance and support services which promote retention (such as application processes, financial aid information, etc.), and assisting with the variety of operational, administrative and outreach responsibilities of the programs.

Additional responsibilities include: provide academic support services, serve as an advocate for students, function as a key member of the Program staff, represent their individual program at various functions and events, and exercise a high degree of independent judgment, confidentiality and decision making. Positions will develop and continuously improve how their program and the College works with students to enhance student satisfaction, student persistence and retention, and ultimately the whole student experience. Responsibilities related to seeking grants and other sources of external funding in collaboration with the Program Directors, as well as fulfilling grant obligations, may be assigned to each of the positions. Participation in providing training and facilitating workshops should be expected.

Lastly, while each position focuses on outreach and retention of students affiliated with their individual program and other students of racial or underrepresented groups, the positions are also expected to support the University’s overall recruitment and retention efforts.

The selected candidates must have excellent communication skills, verbal and written, the ability to communicate with both students and family members, proven attention to detail and ability to work in a high-paced environment. These positions require some travel, primarily in-state, which may involve overnight trips. The individuals hired for these positions must be flexible with work assignments and hours, may be required to work some evenings and weekends to fulfill position responsibilities.

Conditions of Employment:

This position, during the course of university employment will be involved in the receipt of, or accountability for, university fund or other items of value, as well as the unsupervised access with the developmentally disabled, vulnerable adults or children under the age of 16. Employment will be contingent upon successful completion and passing of a background check.

These positions are covered by the Public School Employees’ Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Job requirements include ability to participate in evening and weekend events and multi-day recruitment trips, which will require a valid Driver’s License and clean driving record. Use of personal vehicle is reimbursed at the approved IRS rate.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree related to the Program, or in a relevant academic field, which could include disciplines in the social sciences and humanities, or related fields such as Counseling, Student Affairs, and Education;
  • Relevant experience, such as working in higher education in disadvantaged or underrepresented college and/or high school students; work experience in minority affairs, minority achievement, retention, college preparatory programs, recruitment, and student advising; or other relevant experience;
  • Advanced computer skills to include Microsoft Office and/or Apple, and other applications and technologies necessary for data access/retrieval and communications; experience with Excel spreadsheets and developing databases is required.
  • Understanding of the related culture and cultural protocols specific to the program and its students, and the ability to work with culturally and economically diverse populations, including first-generation students.
  • Required knowledge and abilities in at least three of the following areas:
    • Knowledge of high school to college transition
    • Ability to generate ideas for new and modified first-year transition and retention programs for upperclassmen.
    • Ability to skillfully work with and engage campus constituents with a wide range of understanding, in working with disadvantaged or underrepresented college and/or high school students, and their families (position will have contact with faculty, staff, and administrators);
    • Ability to work effectively with campus service units to disseminate information and encourage dialogue to improve cultural awareness;
    • Demonstrated ability to apply a culturally responsive and flexible approach that is supportive to the diverse needs, including universal accessibility, of our students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • For the position in Chicanx Studies only: Spanish and English bilingual and bicultural proficiency is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters in a related racial diversity studies program, Counseling, Student Affairs, or other related fields specific to working with students represented by our programs and/or first-generation populations;
  • Teaching experience or presentation/workshop planning, design, development and implementation;
  • Work experience with students, individuals of all ages and their families, especially students of African, Chicanx, or American Indian descent;
  • Direct experience working with, developing or coordinating retention initiative or related work;
  • Direct experience or familiarity with grant writing;
  • Experience with social media such as Instagram, Twitter, and/or Facebook; desktop publishing software such as InDesign, Publisher, Adobe Suite.
  • Experience with public speaking engagements
