Department Summary

The Department of Public Health and Recreation at San José State University seeks qualified candidates for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Public Health. The Department of Public Health and Recreation is a multidisciplinary department that awards B.S. degrees in Public Health and Recreation, and a Master of Public Health (MPH) degree with a concentration in community health education. Our undergraduate programs offer concentrations in population data science, community health education, recreation management, and recreation therapy. A Master of Recreation will be launched in the fall of 2021. The PHR Department is one of the largest and fastest-growing units within the College of Health and Human Sciences. With the slogan of Achieving Health and Wellbeing for All, our PHR mission is "to cultivate a learning community, advance scholarship, and act as an agent of social change within the domains of public health and recreation through serving our diverse SJSU PHR students and alumni and partnering communities to facilitate personal and community transformation." Required Qualifications

  • Doctoral degree in public health or closely related field;
  • Scholarship in public health including but not limited to transdisciplinary, engaged, or applied research;
  • Demonstrated experience or potential for teaching excellence, including in areas such as (but not limited to) health policy, health justice, multicultural health, health communication, or quantitative and qualitative methods;
  • Active public health research agenda with substantial potential for publications and funded research; and
  • Applicants should demonstrate an awareness of and sensitivity to the educational goals of a multicultural population as might have been gained in cross-cultural study, training, teaching and other comparable experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of disciplinary trends regarding issues that center race, gender, sexual orientation, immigration, and underserved communities;
  • Experience working with racially diverse students in the classroom, and an understanding of how historical patterns of exclusion of groups within higher education, and the profession, shape patterns of participation and outcomes;
  • An active and well-articulated research agenda, coupled with interest and ability to secure external grant funding;
  • Demonstrated ability or potential to conduct both undergraduate and graduate advising and mentoring;
  • Ability to effectively design, teach, and evaluate graduate and undergraduate courses, in traditional, online, and hybrid formats; and
  • Ability to work collegially on the accreditation of the undergraduate public health program and maintain the accreditation of the Master of Public Health (MPH) program, as well as contribute to the department’s strategic “journey” planning and action.

Responsibilities

  • Teach courses in undergraduate and graduate Public Health programs (classroom, online/hybrid formats), such as health policy, health justice, multicultural health, quantitative and qualitative methods, and/or health communication (Department Overview and Curricula);
  • Leadership in the Public Health programs, including oversight for ongoing assessment of student learning objectives and program outcomes, student advising, alignment of online and campus courses, continuous improvement of teaching and learning, and adherence to all CEPH accreditation requirements;
  • Conduct research, develop successful grants, present academic/professional papers, regularly publish in academic/professional journals, and contribute to the scholarship of public health;
  • Work with colleagues to co-develop the department’s strategic directions, particularly regarding the linkages between public health, recreation, community engagement, and environmental/policy strategies for building healthy communities;
  • Reflect and continuously improve upon one’s instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support historically underserved students;
  • Engage in community and university outreach to develop and maintain practicum/internship sites, curriculum resources, service-learning opportunities, alumni engagement, and development/advancement opportunities;
  • Participate in analysis of and planning for the changing ecology of higher education and the public health workforce, including the development and implementation of a strategic plan and purposeful activities for continuing education/lifelong learning, professional development, individual certification, and program accreditation;
  • Participate in shared governance, usually in department, college, and university committee and other service assignments.
  • Demonstrate awareness and experience understanding the needs of a student population of great diversity – in age, cultural background, ethnicity, primary language and academic preparation – through inclusive course materials, teaching strategies and advisement.
