Primary Purpose of the Organizational Unit:

The Students First Office (SFO) fosters a learner-centered experience for undergraduate success by serving as one of the first lines of response in helping UNCG students address any number of academic issues they may experience at the University. The office coordinates intervention processes across different academic and administrative units to help students determine the best possible success strategies for addressing academic concerns. In collaboration with other support services across campus, SFO serves as an academic one-stop-shop for assisting students with academic advising, academic recovery, appeals, and graduation planning. Additionally, the office is the centralized center for the advisement of Exploratory (undecided) majors and the coordination of all programs for students in academic recovery.

Within SFO, the Academic Advising Team serves as the front line of support for UNCG’s Exploratory majors, executing SFO’s two meeting exploratory advising model. The Academic Advising Team also serves in a supplemental advising capacity, providing services such as daily drop-in advising assistance, course selection assistance, major/minor exploration, graduation planning, academic policy and appeal support, and outreach for students with Starfish flags.

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Associate Director for Academic Advising, the Exploratory Majors Academic Advisor will serve as the academic advisor for an assigned load of Exploratory majors. In addition, the Exploratory Majors Academic Advisor will serve in a supplemental advising role, assisting any undergraduate student at UNCG regardless of major with a wide variety of academic concerns.

More detailed information is listed under “Key Responsibilities” below. Other relevant duties as assigned; some evening and weekend work required.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Master’s Degree in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university OR Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year institution and minimum of 2 years of experience contributing to student success initiatives in a higher education setting
• Proven experience working with diverse populations in a higher education setting
• Experience working within the field of academic advising or in developing and implementing services/initiatives to support college student transition, success, and retention
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

• Proficient computer skills (MS Office, Ellucian BANNER)
• Experience working with faculty, staff, and students in a fast-paced, professional environment
• Experience collaborating with faculty, staff, and students from a variety of academic disciplines and administrative units
• Strong organization skills, ability to handle multiple tasks, establish work priorities, respond to unanticipated student or faculty needs, and work well as part of a team
• Master’s degree preferred in Higher Education, Counseling, or related field from an accredited four-year college or university

Key Responsibility:

Exploratory Majors Advising

Essential Tasks:

● Advise an assigned load of exploratory major advisees, which includes a minimum of 2 meetings each semester to discuss choice of major, academic progress, and career goals
● Oversee assigned advisees’ progress toward major selection and degree completion
● Monitor the major selection process for all exploratory majors approaching the critical 45 semester hour benchmark
● Serve as a liaison to academic programs/departments/units as assigned
● Teach a designated Exploratory Majors section of FYE 101, UNCG’s first-year seminar course

Supplemental Advising and Support

Essential Tasks:

● Provide supplemental advising assistance to students related to major/minor exploration, academic or financial aid appeals assistance, course selection, graduation plan tutorials, etc.
● Serve on the Starfish Outreach Team, providing academic counseling to students flagged in Starfish, UNCG’s early warning system
● Serve as an on-call advisor during SFO walk-in hour and extended evening hours
● Respond to queries from students, faculty, staff, and parents/families as appropriate (within the parameters of FERPA)
● Refer students to appropriate campus and academic resources for additional support

Program Development and Implementation

Essential Tasks:

● Assist in the development of programmatic initiatives designed to support students’ major exploration (i.e. Majorly Puzzled Workshop Series)
● Participate in SOAR for the orientation, registration, and advisement of new exploratory freshmen and transfer students entering the University
● Deliver presentations at events such as Nav1gate (new student convocation) and Destination UNCG (visitation day for admitted high school seniors)
