Research Specialist 1 - Georgetown University Medical Center

Requirements

This Research Specialist 1 will take responsibility for assigned molecular biology research projects, working under direct supervision of the PI and or other lab personnel. Individual must possess a BSc and preferably also an MSc and advanced knowledge and be capable of exercising considerable latitude for independent judgment. Qualified candidates will be able to perform non-routine and complex laboratory duties requiring advanced technical skills and proficiency for divisional faculty. Will receive general supervision from the PI and/or the faculty, and performs the following duties:
  • Schedule and perform experiments in research laboratory.
  • teach junior lab trainees various laboratory techniques as appropriate.
  • Learn to conduct complex research in routine molecular biology procedures including gene cloning, transfection, vitro translation, CHIP assays, assays of gene transcription, Southern, Northern and Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, cell culture, protein isolation and purification.
  • Conduct analysis and interpret experimental data, solve problems in scientific and technical execution and maintain accurate records. Prepare relevant findings as manuscripts for submission to journals and assist with grant proposals as requested.
  • Participate in the planning and design of experimental investigations.
  • Responsible for developing, adapting and implementing new laboratory procedures.
  • Operate complex scientific equipment.
  • Present data in laboratory meetings and other venues.
  • Order supplies and assist other lab managers in maintaining accounting files for laboratory. Search literature for references to technical problems and keep informed by reading technical journal and publications
  • Other duties as assigned.


The Research Specialist 1 (RS1) will report to Dr.Kupfer, the laboratory PI to assist in the organization of her laboratory and to carry out supervised research in complex molecular biology related cancer research. The RS1 might also work under the supervision of other lab members, and where appropriate, teach lab protocols and assist with projects as directed by Dr. Kupfer. The RS1 will also participate in collaborations between the PI's lab and members of other laboratories as required. This RS1 will carry out grant-funded and Cancer center funded research, assist in experiments related to grant funded research projects and thereby contribute to the overall mission and goals of Georgetown University.

Qualifications
  • Candidate must hold a Bachelor's degree, and a Master's is strongly preferred, and have 0-2 years of work-related laboratory experience in research projects in biology, medicine, or other related sciences.
  • Individual must possess basic molecular biology skills and be capable of exercising independent judgment in research design, perform non-routine and complex laboratory duties requiring technical skills and proficiency for divisional faculty.
