The Department of Physics & Astronomy in the College of Science and Mathematics invites applications and nominations for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor. The home campus for this position will be the Statesboro campus.

Georgia Southern University was founded in 1906 as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural school children. Its Savannah campus was established in 1935 as Armstrong Junior College for local youth who could not afford to attend college away from home. The Liberty Center in Hinesville was established in 1998 to serve the military and their families at nearby Fort Stewart, the largest military base east of the Mississippi. All three locations came together in 2018 when Armstrong State University and Georgia Southern University consolidated. The "new" Georgia Southern University preserves a passion for serving its neighbors while preparing students for lifelong service as scholars, leaders, and responsible stewards of their communities.

Within this setting, the Department of Physics & Astronomy contributes significantly to the mission of the University through scholarly endeavors, engagement of students, and outreach to the community and the region. The mission of the Department is four-fold. First, the Department provides its majors with a strong basic undergraduate education in physics and astronomy that will serve them whether they pursue an advanced degree in physics/astronomy, a career in industry, or a career as a science educator; second, the Department provides excellent instruction on introductory physics and astronomy to non-majors; third Department faculty conduct original research in physics/astronomy that is recognized at regional, national and international levels; fourth, the Department fosters an interest in science in the community and the region.
Position Description. Reporting to the Department Chair, the Assistant Professor requires teaching, service, and research responsibilities as well as a terminal degree. The position is a 9-month, tenure track appointment, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
• Ph.D. in Physics, or a closely related field, by August 1, 2021.
• Evidence of successful teaching of physics.
• Excellent record in research with potential to involve both undergraduate and master's students.
• Good command of written and spoken English.
• Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
• Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
• Must be authorized to work in the United States for the duration of employment without assistance from the institution.
• Post-doctoral experience.
• A record of securing external funding associated with a focused program of scholarship.
• A research field that can support the College's strategic research area of Coastal Plain Sciences, Sustainability and Environmental Science.
