The Marlboro Institute for Liberal Arts & Interdisciplinary Studies at Emerson College is looking to fill one section of one course for the Spring 2021 semester, January 19, 2021-May 3, 2021. The available course is: Psychology of Prejudice
This course focuses on the psychological framework for the study of prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination. We will discuss the experiences of various stigmatized groups, including but not limited to prejudice based on age, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, disability, and society-economic class. Students will be exposed to the concepts of privilege/marginalization, intersectionality, and visible/subtle forms of prejudices and their impact across individual, interpersonal and institutional levels. We will also explore psychological, sociocultural and media perspectives to recognize the complexity involved in the formation, activation, and strategies for reducing and responding to prejudice and discrimination.

As part of our Liberal Arts Perspective curriculum, this course contributes to both the Social-Psychological and U.S. Diversity Perspective. Courses in the Social Psychological Perspective examine the social and/or psychological process and mechanisms that influence human behavior. Students will learn to appreciate that people's actions and thoughts reflect factors intrinsic to the person (such as personality, values, and motives) as well as social influences inherent in situations, groups, institutions, communities, and societies. Courses in the U.S. Diversity Perspective foster an understanding of the connections between: (1) the multiple voices, experiences, and contributions made by historically underrepresented groups, and (2) economic, cultural, and socio-political power and inequality in the United States.

For the Spring 2021 term, this section of Psychology of Prejudice is scheduled to meet twice a week on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:00-3:45 pm. It will follow a Flex Learning format where the class will meet once a week in-person on campus on Thursdays at the designated time and once a week remotely online on Tuesdays at the designated time. Office hours will also be synchronous remote.

Flex Learning is designed to minimize health and safety risks to the Emerson community so the in-person component will have a large classroom and social distancing as well as an overall dedensification of the campus. Enrollment for Psychology of Prejudice is capped at 20 students.

The successful candidate must have the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds.
