We seek applicants who are dedicated to serving The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley’s diverse student body as an Assistant Professor of The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences beginning in the 2021-2022 academic year.

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley invites applications for one tenure track Assistant Professor position in the areas of Computational Mathematics to begin in Fall 2021. The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences is engaged in a broad range of interdisciplinary initiatives. Our research projects frequently involve connections with other disciplines such as applied physics, biology, electrical engineering, geology and computer sciences/engineering. Applicants must demonstrate outstanding research ability and have a Ph.D. in Mathematics or a closely related field. Applicants should also have strong records or promise, as undergraduate and graduate instructors. Ideal candidates will have interdisciplinary interests that complement and enhance UTRGV’s current and vibrant research strengths in numerical linear algebra, mathematical biology, computational geometry, numerical optimization, dynamical systems, numerical partial differential equations, and computational fluid dynamics.

The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences faculty have active research programs in pure and applied mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education with over 40 tenured/tenure-track faculty, over 50 graduate students, over 350 student majors, and 80 student minors. The School offers multiple graduate and undergraduate degrees in mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education. The School is anticipating its own interdisciplinary Ph.D. program in Mathematics and Statistics with Interdisciplinary Applications which is currently at the final stage of approval. Excellent opportunities exist for collaborations with colleagues in several colleges and departments across the university, including the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, College of Health Professions, College of Sciences, College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the College of Business and Entrepreneurship. The School of Mathematical and Statistical Sciences faculty closely collaborate with the South Texas Institute of Diabetes and Obesity (Edinburg), Doctor’s Hospital at Renaissance (Edinburg), and the University of Texas School of Public Health (Brownsville).

This appointment involves teaching at undergraduate and graduate levels and requires mentoring and supervision of undergraduate research, graduate research, and master’s thesis. A commitment to excellence in both research and teaching as well as providing service to the community and profession are essential.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field at the time of hire with emphasis in Computational Mathematics. Domains of interest include, for example, developing accurate and efficient numerical methods for solving physical or biological models, numerical methods in linear algebra and optimization, computational geometry, computational fluid dynamics, or developing computational tools/algorithms to better understand data and structures. Computational mathematics is a field closely connected with a variety of other mathematical branches. Often a better mathematical understanding of problems leads to innovative numerical techniques. Indeed, all areas of computational mathematics are welcome.

Discipline Specific Required Qualifications

A commitment to excellence in both research and teaching as well as providing service to the community and profession are essential.

Preferred Qualifications

Applicants with an active research program, experience in teaching a diverse student body and ability to use technology to support teaching and learning are preferred. Applicants with postdoctoral experience in computational mathematics are encouraged to apply. Applicants will be expected to contribute to future doctoral programs, including the above mentioned Ph.D. program in Math and Statistics.

UTRGV is a distributed institution. As such and as assigned, the position may require presence at multiple locations throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Work is performed primarily in a general office environment. This position is security sensitive and thereby subject to the provisions of the Texas Education Code §51.215. The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
