General Summary

Install, configure, test and maintain standard operating, server and network systems, PC workstations and peripherals, ensuring system integrity between hardware, operating system and networks. Assist the Assistant Director IT, Infrastructure with the planning and management necessary to ensure appropriate network architecture, topology and transmission media. Assist in the management of projects to develop systems and network configuration.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Install, configure, maintain, and support network equipment and network operating systems (routers, bridges, servers, switches, and port connectors).

Assume a leadership in the design and standardization of systems and/or network configuration, including hardware, software and integration requirements.

Select, recommend, and configure network and/or third party application programs to provide improved response time, quality and cost effectiveness.

Develop network architecture, topology, and transmission media appropriate for the installation.

Select or recommend network standards and protocols.

Provide technical support on computer and network systems to other computer systems administrators or support staff to ensure the successful provision of campus-wide computer communications.

Monitor and develop recommendations for improve of methodologies and standards for monitoring network traffic, usage and performance.

Maintain, update and implement standards for documentation or equipment and network diagrams.

Evaluate user needs, systems and new technologies to recommend the most effective communication and transmission systems.

Act as either primary or secondary technical liaison for network product or system vendors.

Develop and manage project plans and schedules.

Lead the development and enforcement of network security procedures.

Assist in the preparation of recommendations, pilot installations, testing, evaluation, and installation procedures and lead teams to implement project plans and schedules for projects which will affect a segment of the University community and which utilize standard methodology.

Assist in the design of the campus network, providing the infrastructure for access to all University and Internet information technology services.

Assist in development and maintenance of strategic plans for networking, client/server applications, and end-user access to University and Internet information technology services.

Perform other departmental duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requires a Bachelor's Degree in a computer related field plus five years relevant experiences; or the combination of education and experience that enable the performance of all aspects of the position.

Requires expert knowledge of:
- Network systems design, integration, implementation, and
management
- Network operating systems installation and management
- Microcomputer and network integration
- Network security planning, analysis and management
- Solaris on the Sun platform and Linux on the Intel platform
- Macintosh and Windows/Intel platforms
- Client operating system, enterprise database, and
productivity software

Must have excellent customer service and interpersonal skills demonstrated both over the phone and face-to-face. Must be able to effectively communicate technical information to non-technical users verbally and in writing. Must able to work effectively in a dynamic team environment where assignments and priorities can change at a moment's notice. Must be able to make decisions on imperfect information. Relevant professional certifications preferred.

Requires ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations such as the ability to stand, walk, bend and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visuals acuity to use a keyboard, work with network cabling and diagnostic and other common tools, and operate equipment and read technical information.
