Job Description
The University of California, Irvine's Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND) has an opportunity for an Associate Project Scientist. The mission of UCI MIND is to engage in cutting edge, interdisciplinary research designed to discover the basic mechanisms of neurodegeneration and brain aging, characterize the transition from normal aging to Alzheimer's disease, and develop new treatments to slow or eliminate cognitive impairment resulting from any etiology. This position is within the UCI Model Organism Development and Evaluation for Late-onset Alzheimer's disease (MODEL-AD) project. MODEL-AD is a NIA/NIH-funded multi-project, multi-institutional grant whose goal is to produce the next generation of mouse models for late-onset AD and develop new therapeutic targets. Responsibilities include being the liaison between the Centers that belong to the Consortia: Indiana University, Jackson Laboratory, University of Pittsburgh and Sage Bionetworks; performing microdissection of mice brain for RNA-seq and single-cell RNA-seq experiments; maintaining the catalog and inventory of tissue specimens; writing reports to the NIA; organizing the monthly Steering Committee meeting comprised of the consortium leaders, researchers and the program officer from the NIA; and for ensuring that the data generated at UCI is made publicly available to the scientific community through the AD Knowledge Portal.

Requirements
The successful candidate will have a PhD in pharmacology and/or neuroscience with a minimum of 10 years of experience in the field of neuroscience, and at least 5+ years of scientific experience with Alzheimer's disease research. The candidate must have experience with animal models of Alzheimer's disease with extensive knowledge of animal surgery, behavioral, biochemical and imaging assays. Experience with beta-amyloid and tau interaction and synaptic loss within Alzheimer's disease is highly desirable. The candidate will be responsible for being the liaison between the Centers that belong to the Consortia: Indiana University, Jackson Laboratory, University of Pittsburgh and Sage Bionetworks; performing microdissection of mice brain for RNA-seq and single-cell RNA-seq experiments; maintaining the catalog and inventory of tissue specimens; managing experiment timelines; training undergraduate and laboratory assistants; manuscript preparation; writing reports to the NIA; organizing the monthly Steering Committee meeting comprised of the consortium leaders, researchers and the program officer from the NIA; and for ensuring that the data generated at UCI is made publicly available to the scientific community through the AD Knowledge Portal. The Applicants must have excellent supervisory skills, the ability to work independently, including setting team and personal goals and meeting deadlines, oral and written communication skills are essential. Certification in Project Management is highly desired. This position will be appointed at the level that is commensurate with the education and experience of the individual candidate.
