Postdoctoral Scholar - Land Atmosphere Control - ESPM Division of Ecosystem Sciences

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy & Management, Division of Ecosystem Sciences, at the University of California, Berkeley seeks applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position to conduct research in the field of land-atmospheric interactions in sub-seasonal to seasonal prediction systems, with a focus on mountainous regions, at 100% time, with an anticipated start date of Spring 2021. (Earlier or later start dates will be considered)

The Girotto lab research lies in the broad areas of remote sensing, and data assimilation for improving land surface hydrology. This project studies how the management of water supply and hazard risks in this region is tied to the ability to forecast variations in the hydrologic cycle, and how such predictions are difficult due to the complex interplay among atmosphere, ocean, and land processes and the influence of orography on precipitation and runoff patterns. The lab investigates how snow and soil moisture alter large-scale meteorological patterns through the modification of surface fluxes; therefore, their accurate representation is necessary in order to reliably simulate temperature and precipitation variations across the High Mountain Asia (HMA) Region on subseasonal to seasonal timescales. https://nature.berkeley.edu/girottolab/research/

The Postdoctoral Scholar in this position will be involved in a NASA sponsored project that aims at understanding the land surface controls on subseasonal to seasonal predictability over the HMA Region. The postdoc will be responsible for constraining, analyzing and investigating the role of land-atmosphere interactions in the Goddard Earth Observing System subseasonal-to-seasonal (GEOS-S2S) meteorological and hydrological forecasting system. The postdoc will contribute to and lead interpretation of results and publication of peer-reviewed journal articles, and conference presentations. The role will also work closely with project's collaborators at the Goddard Space and Flight Center, Greenbelt, Maryland and with other NASA HMA research teams. Finally, the postdoc will provide oversight to supporting graduate students, and will, as part of the postdoctoral experience, receive mentoring for developing research proposals and participation in career development activities will be strongly encouraged.

PhD (or equivalent international degree) or enrolled in a PhD degree program (or equivalent international degree)

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS (by start date)
PhD (or equivalent international degree)
The candidate should have no more than four years of post-degree research experience by start date

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (by start date)
Demonstrated background in land and atmospheric modeling and atmospheric teleconnections
Familiarity with large climate models or forecasting systems and associated outputs
Demonstrated skills within programs such as Fortran, MATLAB, Python)
Demonstrated written and verbal communications skills

APPOINTMENT
This position reports to Professor Manuela Girotto. The appointment will be at 100% for one year with the possibility of an extension based on satisfactory performance and availability of funding.
