SUMMARY
The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs in the Fielding School of Public Health (FSPH) will report jointly to the Dean and the Associate Dean for Academic Programs, or a designee identified by the Dean. The Assistant Dean of Academic Programs in the Fielding School of Public Health will have broad responsibility for all aspects of academic program administration of undergraduate education and some aspects of graduate programs as directed by the Dean or the Associate Dean for Academic Programs.

The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs will have administrative oversight of the new undergraduate major programs in public health and the undergraduate public health minor. Working closely with the Dean, the Associate Dean for Academic Programs, and other faculty leadership, the incumbent will direct, coordinate, and manage undergraduate education programs, initiatives, and resources. The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs will provide strategic guidance, and administrative leadership to support the development of new innovative academic programs in FSPH including graduate self-supporting degree programs. The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs will provide administrative oversight to evaluate FSPH academic programs, to ensure they are consistent with the Council on Education of Public Health, and provide regular reports and recommendations to senior FSPH leadership about how to improve both undergraduate and graduate education. It is expected that the mix of responsibilities of the Assistant Dean for Academic Programs will change as the new FSPH undergraduate programs ramp up over time.

The successful candidate must have a doctorate in public health, higher education, or related fields; experience working with academic policy and programs at a large public research university; understanding of the principles of “shared governance;” knowledge of UCLA processes and Academic Senate procedures; broad familiarity with existing curriculum, programs, and services for UCLA undergraduates; skills in information retrieval and data management; and demonstrated leadership abilities to facilitate effective collaboration among individuals and groups charged with promoting innovation and quality in undergraduate education.

STRATEGIC PLANNING AND ACADEMIC PROGRAMS DEVELOPMENT
The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs provides strategic and administrative leadership for academic programs and initiatives that seek to expand and improve the quality of undergraduate public health education, school-wide graduate education, and self-supporting degree programs.
The incumbent is expected to:
(1) Partner with faculty and departments on course development and staffing,
(2) Cultivate faculty interest in undergraduate education,
(3) Collaborate with instructional support units—Center for the Advancement of Teaching, Center for Community Learning, International Education Office, Library, Summer Sessions, Undergraduate Research Centers, and Writing Programs—to enhance programmatic and curricular opportunities for students and faculty, and other key units on campus,
(4) Facilitate graduate student TA training opportunities,
(5) Collaborate with community partners,
(6) Advise School leadership on Academic Senate curriculum review and approval processes, and
(7) Conduct periodic evaluations of academic programs and report outcomes to stakeholders.

The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs also promotes effective collaborations among faculty and staff, leads initiatives to expand academic programs, works to increase the visibility of the School and discipline, advances the quality of undergraduate education, and represents the School in campus-wide undergraduate initiatives, including the development of interdisciplinary programs and diversity-related projects.

ACADEMIC PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION
The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs assumes a lead role, working closely with the Dean, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, Associate Dean of Student Affairs, department chairs, and School FEC in managing School-wide academic programs, creating and implementing academic policies, developing and executing recruitment and admissions processes, curriculum development, overseeing program requirements and changes, expanding awareness of undergraduate programs on and off campus, and preparing reports for the school community evaluating the status of undergraduate and graduate public health education in the school.

The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs also represents the interests of undergraduate education when working with faculty, administrators, and students from across campus. The incumbent is expected to:
(1) Develop and oversee the mentoring and advising of majors and minors related to program of study, research interests, independent studies as well as potential career opportunities, and
(2) Ensure all accreditation requirements are achieved.

Working closely with staff, the incumbent provides critical planning support and coordination to budgetary, personnel, and information technology matters, and meets regularly (individually and in small groups) with faculty and staff to determine and provide resources needed to support undergraduate academic programs and initiatives.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM MANAGEMENT
The Assistant Dean is responsible for the successful implementation of the FSPH undergraduate program including following the campus processes for the final approvals, providing guidance for navigating and completing any necessary Campus or paperwork and/or processes in order to implement the new program. The Assistant Dean will manage and personally oversee all next steps including:
(1) Lead undergraduate recruitment and admissions efforts focusing on coordination of the developing a diverse student body,
(2) Liaise with UCLA Undergraduate Admissions, New Student and Transition Program, and other recruitment and retention units on campus, and
(3) Ensure that the program is implemented and the school is prepared to admit the first student cohort.

TEACHING AND SCHOLARSHIP
The Assistant Dean for Academic Programs is encouraged to prepare publications and or presentations at UC system-wide and national conferences discussing educational innovation and curricular initiatives with respect to undergraduate public health education and related scholarship. The incumbent may also participate in teaching in the undergraduate public health programs if qualified.
