The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life advises recognized fraternities and sororities, their governing councils, and manages Greek Village housing. The Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life prepares students for society through a values-based fraternal experience. Our work impacts the student experience in three ways: Chapter Services, Council and Community Development, and Living and Learning Environments. Fraternity|Sorority Life also provides several programs to enhance leadership development and to educate the Greek Community of over 2,800 students

Essential Job Duties:

The House Director will coordinate the student development and administrative functions of an Organization-Owned Fraternity or Sorority House and the community within. This position will be directly responsible for the following:
Advising:

  • Directly advise undergraduate House Manager position for the organization.
  • Creating a sense of community by promoting peer accountability among chapter residents.
  • Providing training on organizational and university policies reinforcing community standards.
  • Maintaining a high level of visibility within the residential community for the purpose of serving as an on-site advisor to chapter residents, including but not limited to regular office hours, chapter programming, chapter meals.
  • Meeting regularly with organization leadership, advisors, and House Corporation volunteers.
  • Advising student residents on the development and implementation of programs, applicable policies and procedures, risk management, issues management, leadership development and organization management.
  • Leading and/or assisting in the planning, hosting and/or presentation of programs to meet the developmental needs of members.
  • Serving as a mediator to assist residents in addressing community conflicts when they arise.
  • Maintaining an environment conducive to student academic success and safety.

Leadership:

  • Providing leadership, administrative operations, programming, and facilities management in a residential house composed of 100-150 student members.
  • Making informed decisions based on a clear understanding of the impact and consequences involved.
  • Creating and maintaining an open and inclusive community within the house.
  • Serving as a communication link between Fraternity and Sorority Life, House Corporation, and residents.
  • Exercising good judgement and remaining unbiased and impartial while addressing house issues.
  • Participating in area decision-making regarding policies, procedures, programs, and facilities management.
  • Overseeing daily operations including facilities, overall resident management, occupancy management, financial budget management to ensure a positive, healthy and safe living-learning environment for our residents.

Policy Enforcement:

  • Responding appropriately to student concerns and manage student issues.
  • Following all University Policies, Procedures, and Guidelines including but not limited to safety, civility, information security, and non-discrimination policies and procedures.
  • Consulting with the Associate Director to refer cases to the Organizational Standards Board, Department of Fraternity and Sorority Life, or the Office of Student Conduct.

Crisis Management and On-Call Responsibilities:

  • Making appropriate referrals to University support services ie, Student Health, Counseling Services, and Ombuds services.
  • Responding to emergencies and provide leadership in crisis situations, collaborating with campus partners when appropriate.
  • Must be onsite overnight except when prior arrangements have been made for time away.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure.
  • Practicing effective communication with University administration, Organizational Leadership, and if applicable emergency personnel.
  • Serving as a resource or referral agent for students and staff experiencing personal concerns or crisis.
  • Serving as a member of the on call duty rotation.

Administration:

  • Coordinating fall and spring student check-in and checkout system.
  • Coordinating and directing the opening and closing of the house, as well as any key fob or entry fob distribution and records.
  • Managing room assignment and room change process for the facility.
  • Keeping appropriate administrative records such as meal plan participation to conduct meal plan and parlor fee billing for the organization.
  • Initiating change, developing, and implementing new ideas as concepts as appropriate.

Facilities:

  • Coordinating inspections as required by the University, state, federal, or local agencies.
  • Touring buildings and grounds on a regular basis to identify facility needs.
  • Soliciting building improvement ideas from staff and residents.
  • Working in conjunction with Fraternity and Sorority Life staff and Organizational Leadership to ensure the community is well maintained and a safe environment for residents.

Other Responsibilities:

Other duties as assigned and as outlined in the operations manual provided by the House Corporation.

Minimum Experience and Education:

A Master’s Degree in Higher Education or related field OR Bachelor’s degree and 3+ years of experience managing a residential environment or working with student activities.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Ability to perform basic to intermediate functions of Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel (or similar software).
  • Ability to work independently and maintain confidential information.
  • Professional and diplomatic interactions with students, parents, alumni, service providers and community resources.
  • Strong interpersonal skills, particularly with college-age women, including patience, flexibility, and problem solving.
  • Ability to climb up and down several flights of stairs and lift 25 pounds, with or without reasonable accommodations, if necessary.
  • Must be onsite, overnight, 7 nights per week when members are in residence, except when prior arrangements have been made for other facility supervision.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education or Related Field
  • Property/Facility Management Experience (non-leasing agent)
  • Previous managerial skills
