Position Overview:

This position is equivalent to an Academic Advisor II position on the UCO campus.

Advises students concerning an appropriate academic schedule, choice of major and/or minor, number of hours that may be taken, probation, and/or suspension. Evaluates students’ abilities, interests, talents, and personality characteristics in order to develop appropriate academic and career goals. Provides guidance to students in matters related to academic and career goals, course load, and study habits. Suggests remedial or corrective options and assists students in making better adjustments and in planning intelligent life goals. Assists with new student orientation of freshman and transfer students. Completes documents such as graduation forms and study abroad degree evaluations. Evaluates and/or updates student records in order to post grades, perform graduation checks, monitors student progress, and advises students on an appropriate plan of study. May assist with recruitment of prospective students. Performs work under minimal supervision. Handles complex issues and problems. Possesses solid working knowledge of subject matter.

Department Specific Essential Job Functions:

  • Coaches and counsels students regarding academic endeavors.
  • Provides guidance to students in selection of a major and/or minor.
  • Evaluates student records and completes degree evaluations for individual students and student groups and articulates coursework, as needed.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of student success and retention programs, initiatives, and materials.
  • Acts as a resource person for academic information and decision-making strategies.
  • Makes policy change recommendations to the Director of Student Success and Retention.
  • Acts as a liaison between the College of Business departments, campus community, and business students.
  • Helps students find transformative co-curricular activities that provide opportunities for leadership; research, creative, and scholarly activities; service learning; global and cultural competencies, and health and wellness.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Qualifications Required:

Requires a bachelor’s degree and related work experience. Demonstrated academic achievement as prior student. Proficient in computer skills. Will be required to utilize Banner and other university computer programs to assist with student enrollment and advisement processes. Must be service-oriented and able to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and the general public in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency in basic mathematics, excellent communication skills, and a proactive participant in a team environment.

Qualifications Preferred:

Master’s degree in a related field. 2+ years of prior academic advising/counseling experience. Familiarity with admission and enrollment process in an institution of higher education setting and its undergraduate degree programs.

Responsibilities / Skills / Competencies:

Knowledgeable in the higher education attainment process, particularly the requirements and general value of education. Demonstrates a professional attitude and creative counseling techniques. Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively with department chairpersons and/or deans regarding degree program requirements. Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, initiative, keen attention-to-detail, and organization skills. Able to work independently, handle multiple tasks simultaneously, work well under pressure, and interact professionally with all segments of the University and external community. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
