Our community is a tight-knit group of remarkable individuals interested in intellectual inquiry and making a difference in the world.

The Director of Graduate Student Affairs fulfills student affairs responsibilities in service to all graduate students at Georgetown University. The body of work for this position includes outreach to prospective and existing graduate students, support for the graduate student governance organization (GradGov) and over 80 graduate student groups, advocacy for graduate student needs, alumni relations, philanthropy, student grievances, development of and participation in University diversity initiatives, and support for international students. Overall, this position supports the development of a richer graduate student experience on campus and the overall success of the graduate student body.

Oversight and Support of GradGov and Graduate Student Groups
  • Advise and support 80+ graduate student organizations
  • Training and mentorship of graduate student leaders (e.g. GradGov appointees)
  • Support academic or student life programs offered by GradGov


Diversity and Advancement
  • Participate in Graduate School and University efforts to increase diversity and enrich the Georgetown community
  • Collaborate with University representatives to support international students
  • Plan, execute, and participate in activities that promote graduate student experiences to alumni and external organizations (e.g. John Carroll Weekend)
  • Develop relationships with other key GU offices to expand the services and resources available to graduate students


Representation, Advocacy and Grievances
  • Serve as a graduate student life representative at the University
  • Actively participate on university student life committees
  • Support processes that address graduate student grievances


Events and Outreach
  • Organize major annual events for graduate students (e.g. orientation/induction, barbecue, student awards ceremony)
  • Actively collect and share student stories to promote graduate student accomplishments, life, and activities.
  • Plan student academic and life activities such as workshops, student life and wellness programs, and other events throughout the year to support graduate student life on campus


Additional Duties
  • Participate in major Graduate School events
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor or Dean.


The Director of Graduate Student Affairs reports to the Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. In addition, the position interacts with graduate student groups, program faculty and staff, alumni, University Counsel, the Division of Student Affairs, other University departments, and external organizations. The Director of Graduate Student Affairs supervises an Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred
  • 3+ years of experience in student affairs and
  • 3+ years of experience in higher education
  • Experience supervising staff
  • Facility with current office applications
  • Facility with outreach mechanisms, including social media and other resources
  • Understanding of security and privacy with respect to information, data, and communication
  • Commitment to excellent service
  • Creativity for building new initiatives in support of graduate student needs, notably in diversity and inclusion and/or international students
