A research institute of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, RENCI links people, data and resources across the UNC system, Duke University, Research Triangle Park and the State of North Carolina.

This position provides experienced research software development support for RENCI projects which involve local and distributed collaborations with academic researchers, state and federal agency subject matter experts, and computer and computational scientists.

The Research Software Developer will design and implement sophisticated cloud native computing environments. Responsibilities include designing and implementing data structures, algorithms, and computational workflows supporting RENCI’s state sponsored and national collaborations, developing continuous integration/deployment pipelines, orchestrating and dynamically scaling cloud native systems, monitoring systems’ performance relative to service level agreements, automating incident response to system and application problems. The Research Software Developer will work with RENCI management and staff to develop project requirements and with users to present functionality and solicit feedback.

Educational Requirements:

Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree in Computer Science or a related discipline required; for candidates demonstrating comparable background in academic or research computing management, will accept a relevant undergraduate degree in Computer Science or a related discipline and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution.

Qualifications and Experience:

At least three years of professional software development using Python, Java, or another major language. Experience applying design patterns, applying object oriented, procedural, and functional programming methods, designing and troubleshooting concurrent systems and micro-services, using the Linux operating system and command line interface, deploying in cloud environments, applying operating systems concepts including processes, threads, files, and sockets, installing system software and services, developing web applications, applying authentication and authorization concepts, and using databases in applications are required. The position also requires a demonstrated practice of iterative, customer focused software development in a continuous integration setting involving multiple teams, a capacity for self education, interdisciplinary study and inquiry, effective oral and written communication skills and interpersonal communication, human relations and team building skills, and the ability to foster and maintain collaborations with local and national researchers and subject matter experts.
