Position Summary:We are seeking highly motivated postdoctoral research associates to conduct research on pathogen-host interactions relevant to intestinal infections. The overarching goals of the laboratory are to understand how intestinal microbiota mediate pathogen-host interactions. The research aims in this position are to dissect mechanistic relationships between microbiota and susceptibility to and severity from infection with the gut protozoan Giardia lamblia. Investigations are performed in gnotobiotic mice in the National Gnotobiotic and Rodent Resource Center. Primary outcomes in mice include 1) intensity and duration of Giardia infection (microscopy and histopathology), 2) mouse growth after infection (animal husbandry and attention to experimental design), and 3) intestinal permeability. The post-doctoral researcher will perform animal experiments independently and will interface with collaborating laboratories to examine the composition and function of complex microbial communities, immune responses, and histopathology of the gut at different time points after infection.
Educational Requirements:Ph.D. in Microbiology, Virology, Molecular Biology, or other related fields is required.
Qualifications and Experience:Candidates must have training and experience handling mice and performing basic procedures (orogastric gavage, blood collection, tissue harvest).
Experience in a BSL-2 lab or handling infectious agents
Ability to focus for extended periods of time. This work involves regular, almost daily, interface with highly infectious gut pathogens. Attention to hygiene and strict use of appropriate personal protective equipment is required.
Equal Opportunity Employer:The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill is an equal opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to age, color, disability, gender, gender expression, gender identity, genetic information, race, national origin, religion, sex, sexual orientation, or status as a protected veteran.
