Biological Scientist IJob Description:
Participates in and coordinates aspects of seedling stage of sugarcane cultivar development program in sandy soil. It includes planting seedlings on grower farms; conducting field ratings of plots for growth and disease; millable stalk counting for yield estimations; running laboratory analyses and maintaining NIR.
Making selections of promising clones; managing large, complex spreadsheets; conducting statistical analyses of results; and building tables as MS Word documents for annual reports; attending meetings with the sugarcane cultivar development research team from UF, USDA and FSCL to schedule activities.
Participates and coordinates agronomic trials (e.g. family evaluations) to improve selection of clones at different stages on sand soil. It includes designing experiments; planting research trials at growers fields; data collection on germination, tiller count, millable stalk count, leaf area index, chlorophyll fluorescence or SPAD, Stomatal conductance; sugarcane sampling for sugar analysis; data analysis in SAS and data reporting.
Participates in stage 3 sugarcane cultivar development program on muck and sand soil, and other agronomic trials on both soil types. It includes coordination with agronomist from Florida Sugar Cane League and other lab members to provide assistance in planting, harvesting and other data collection on stage 3 and agronomic trials at EREC and different growers farms.Expected Salary:
$17.72 - $19.63 per hour; Commensurate with experienceMinimum Requirements:
Bachelor’s degree in biology or a closely related life science field.Preferred Qualifications:
A masters or Ph.D. degree in agronomy or related discipline is preferred. Prior experience in agronomic row crops, agrochemicals, conducting field, greenhouse, and laboratory experiments preferred. Computer skills (word processing, spreadsheet, statistical software) required. Efficient communication skills (both oral and written) are necessary.
