Position Summary:

This position will be the primary contact for all persons in and outside of the College and University associated with safety, security and compliance. This position is to liaise between the safety, security and compliance entities within UGA and the Colleges faculty, staff and students to ensure we are operating the College in a manner that is safe, secure and in compliance with local, state and federal safety requirements. This position will be a position of trust that will have extensive federal background clearance to operate independently within the College’s containment laboratories. The position is responsible for providing comprehensive health, safety, and/or compliance support and assisting in the University goal of a safe, healthy, and compliant workplace and academic environment. This position focuses on administrative responsibilities and involves activities such as: the receipt, processing, and maintenance of health, safety and compliance documents for facilities staff; advising faculty, staff, students and researchers regarding safety and compliance issues; analysis and interpretation of routine to highly complex policies, regulations, standards, and guidelines; providing training; and safety and compliance documentation and dissemination. This position will handle a case load of safety and/or compliance related tasks of high complexity with considerable independence under administrative supervision. Other responsibilities include actively promoting and managing specific aspects of safety and compliance and providing assistance to faculty, staff, and students. The successful candidate will have excellent communication skills and a strong desire to help all personnel and students in the College.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

•Knowledge of environmental regulations
•Knowledge of regulations, trends, and best practices related to safety, security and compliance.
•At least two years of safety experience
•Strong interpersonal and communication skills
•Physical fitness required to inspect various work settings
•Manage a variety of tasks simultaneously.
•Skill in the use of computers and applicable technology.
•Act in a professional fashion when coordinating with internal departments
and external agencies in matters related to safety, security and compliance.

BS in occupational health, industrial hygiene, or occupational safety and at least 2-years of experience is required. An MS as well as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) and/or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) certification (or other Board of Certified Safety Professionals certification) is desired.

Physical Demands:

Will respond and move rapidly and frequently without restrictions, transport up to 20 pounds or more, and wear respiratory protection. Will hold a valid driver’s license and may drive when needed to perform job tasks. This work may involve potential exposure to animal bio safety laboratories. May work with occupational hazards such as infectious diseases and harmful chemicals. Exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards. May work in crawlspaces.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Coordinate safety, security and compliance needs for the college with OBS, ESD, FMD and OUA. Provide comprehensive health, safety, and/or compliance support. Administrative responsibilities include the receipt, processing, and maintenance of health, safety and compliance documents for facilities staff; advising faculty, staff, students and research and clinical faculty regarding safety and compliance issues; analysis and interpretation of routine to highly complex policies, regulations, standards, and guidelines; providing training; and safety and compliance documentation and dissemination. The SCO will handle a case load of safety and/or compliance related tasks of high complexity with considerable independence under administrative supervision. Other responsibilities may include; AAALAC support for research animal spaces, Incinerator performance documentation and training, digester performance documentation and training, maintaining permits such as title 5, soil amendment, USDA, DEA and others, decontamination and verifications of research equipment and BSL3 spaces, performance verification of BSL2 and BSL3 labs, and provide checks and clearance for staff and contractors to perform work in lab environments. Other responsibilities include actively promoting and managing specific aspects of safety and compliance and providing assistance to faculty, staff, and students.
