Note: This job requires living on Sapelo Island, GA, a barrier island accessible only by small boat or state-operated ferry (you’ll be issued a pass for the ferry).

This is a temporary position paid hourly that will be filled in December and accommodates our 2021 Marine Biology Spring Semester, with the position ending on April 30, 2021. Campus will be closed during the holidays, December 25- January 1, 2021.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Assist with lab work and field trips on Sapelo Island, nearby sites, and the mainland: Drive a 15 passenger van and field truck. Help prepare for lab and field activities. Accompany class on some field excursions, including in salt marshes and on small boats. Ensure procedures and safety policies are known and followed. Transport equipment and supplies to the island and field sites. Other assistance as requested.

Duties/Responsibilities:

Live in the dormitories with students.
Enforce the rules of UGA and offer personal and professional guidance to students.
Provide guidance on safety procedures, security precautions, and opportunity to participate in UGAMI and out-of-class activities.
Be accessible to students at various times throughout the day, including most nights and weekend.
Interact with and get to know the students.
Understand and uphold all UGAMI rules, regulations, policies, and crisis response protocols.
Mediate conflicts among students as they arise.
Lead by example in terms of character, integrity, and level of maturity.
Address all policy violations immediately and consistently, and seek support and guidance from supervisor when the situation is difficult.
Notify Facilities Management Dept of facilities concerns.
Coordinate and assist students with weekly grocery/supply trip to mainland, including driving when needed.

Position Summary:

This position involves living and working at the University of Georgia Marine Institute on Sapelo Island. This is a 40 hour/week position but the hours will be irregular, including weekends. Employee will live in the dormitories with 6-12 undergraduate students and provide supervision, enforcement of rules and proper consideration of others, and transportation of students as needed. This position provides guidance on safety as well as promoting the sense of community among the learners. The person will also provide logistical support for some class and field activities, including labs, as well as assistance with mainland shopping or other issues related to living on Sapelo Island. Driving a van is expected. Housing and dinners are provided with this position.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, Certification in Position:

Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, marine science, environmental science, fish & wildlife, or related field is preferred.

Prefer relevant residential advisory experience (Residence Advisor/ Residence Life Assistant, camp counselor, etc.) and First Aid/CPR training.

Being present on Sapelo during the weekends is a requirement.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies :

Hear and verbally communicate via telephone and in person. Interpret and apply policies and procedures. Memory for circumstances and changes as well as completing detail-oriented tasks is important. Interpersonal skills and trustworthiness is essential for this student-oriented position.

Successful skills with videography and editing for use with laboratory and field experiences. Virtual teaching assistance and interaction.

Physical Demands:

Lift and carry over 20 pounds, both assisted and unassisted. Sitting at a desk and computer for moderate periods of time as well as bending or squatting to file.
