Job description

General Summary

Assists in the administration of the University’s policies and procedures, both informal and formal. Serve as the interface between students and the University. Provide objective and non-biased services that serve to develop a fair and equitable university community. Work directly with students, faculty, and staff and others to provide consultation related to university policies and procedures. Provide assistance within assigned unit to solicit new projects, service, or program opportunities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Works directly with the Director and office professional staff in managing the daily operation of the Disability Resource Center by designing, implementing, and updating administrative procedures for disability services and accommodations, in addition to staying informed on University policies and procedures as they relate to access.

Ensure timely disposition, management, and resolution of all cases referred to the assigned department.

Supervise, hire, train, and evaluate Disability Resource Center, graduate assistants, and student workers.

Serve as an intermediary to faculty and students for grievances.

Plan and manage projects, student outreach, recruitment, and retention programs and activities.

Ensure timely disposition, management, and resolution of residential and academic accommodations consistent with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Americans with Disabilities Act, ADA Amendment Act, and other related state and federal laws.

Help develop and provide programs and training on behavior and appropriate campus citizenship to faculty, hearing board members, students, organizations, and related University constituents.

Consult with students, faculty, and staff; parents and external constituents; police, personnel, and attorneys regarding the application of formal University processes.

Listen to and advise students on interpretations of university policies and procedures, the steps to take to resolve problems informally, and what formal and administrative options are available.

Represent the Department and/or Division on University committees concerned with addressing student issues, campus culture, and University policies and procedures.

Produce notices and or correspondence that are in compliance with minimum due process and/or applicable standards for timeliness, accuracy, and content.

Recommend structures, policy changes, and staffing of related advisory and disciplinary boards, committees and working groups.

Maintain appropriate case records by documenting communications with and regarding student, staff, and/or faculty interactions in the specified student affairs area database.

Ensure adherence to University policies and confirm due process as it relates to institutional protocol.

Provide leadership, training and guidance related to University policies and procedures.

Assist with resolution and prevention of both academic and non-academic concerns. Review and evaluate University policies, protocols, and processes as indicated; make recommendations and lead initiatives for development and improvement as needed.

Keep informed about off-campus issues and legal decisions which impact the Department and/or Division.

Assist in preparation of grant requests to obtain advancement funds for specified student affairs area.

Perform related departmental duties as assigned.


Knowledge and skills typically acquired through the completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in student personnel, special education, higher education administration, counseling, psychology, criminal justice, conflict resolution, or a related field is required. Master’s preferred.

Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ADA Amendments Act, and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, and other related state and federal laws is required.

2 years of full-time professional experience in disability services, student conduct processes, conflict resolution, dispute resolution, or related field in Academic and Student Affairs is required.

Working knowledge of academic administration, including an understanding of department and college levels and university community dynamics is required.

Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information and use discretion in sensitive matters is required.

Strong written and verbal communication skills are required.

Skills in mediation, conflict resolution, student advising, or counseling is preferred.

Experience in a higher education setting is preferred.

Experience in case management preferred.
