Position Summary

The Research Tech I will be responsible for assisting in experimental lab work and maintaining and preparing lab reagents. The position will involve in vitro experimental techniques that may include western blotting, DNA cloning, cell culture, fresh tissue processing, among other biochemical and molecular techniques. This position is located at the MSU Grand Rapids Research Center, 400 Monroe Ave NW, Grand Rapids, MI.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in the specific field of research employment or other related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.

Desired Qualifications

The applicant should have a Bachelor's degree in a scientific field, preferably molecular biology, neuroscience, or a related field. In addition, experience performing basic research techniques in the specific or related field (i.e pipetting, preparing buffers and other lab reagents) is necessary. Applicant should be detail oriented and self-motivated, follow instructions carefully, and must interact, communicate, and work well with others. Experience with word processing and spreadsheet software.

Prior experience working in an academic or industry lab. Experience performing experimental techniques. This may include western blotting, DNA cloning, PCR, cell culture, small animal techniques (e.g. animal handling, post-mortem tissue processing) among others. Prior experience or training in neuroscience and/or cell and molecular biology laboratories is preferred.
