Position Summary

A Research Technologist I position is available immediately in the lab of Dr. Min-Hao Kuo, Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Michigan State University. This position is funded by an NIH-sponsored project on Alzheimer's disease drug discovery and prevention.

The research will focus on the production, characterization, and quality control of recombinant tau protein from E. coli cells. Methods used include bacterial cell growth, induction, and protein isolation for biochemical, biophysical, and cell biology examination of the fibrillization and cytotoxicity of the purified protein. The final protein products will support the research carried out in the Kuo lab, as well as those by our collaborators in academia and industry.

This work will require cloning genes into expression vectors, western blotting, identifying and maintaining transformed bacteria, isolation and characterizing recombinant proteins, maintaining very accurate and detailed records of the molecular and biochemical characters of the subject proteins. Communication and collaboration with other members in the lab is essential.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in life science, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, or related field; up to six months of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in basic research techniques in the specific or related field; word processing, spreadsheet; database and/or desktop publishing software; presentation software; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job may require the appropriate pesticide applicator's registration/certification and/or experience working with potentially dangerous research animals.

Desired Qualifications

The selected candidate must have excellent communication, collaboration, and record keeping skills.

This position requires basic microbiology, biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology knowledge normally acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in life science, biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, or related field.
