Smith College invites applications for anticipated openings for Kitchen Assistants. Qualified applicants will be contacted for interviews as vacancies occur.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Assists in the preparation and presentation of meals and all related items during assigned shifts and in the cleaning of all Dining Services areas and equipment. Works cooperatively in a safe and sanitary manner with other staff members to ensure the efficient and professional operation of the unit in accordance with work rules and departmental policies. Supports the creation of a dining atmosphere which is cordial and accommodating for all students and college guests under the guidance of the cook on duty and direction from the Manager. Reviews upcoming menus/ function sheets and food orders and works cooperatively and accurately in planning production.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assists cooks in the preparation, garnishing, and service of menu items including condiments. Prepares items for salad bar units including preparation of salad mixtures and follows standard recipes. Does initial vegetable and fruit preparation such as washing and cutting, chopping or shredding prior to cooking/service. Assists with other meal preparation as needed including slicing, grilling and frying and baking. Responsible for providing garnishes and works in tandem with Chef to serve family style meals/ plated dinners, as well as, assisting with display cooking. Monitors, replenishes, or provides substitutions for salad bar items during meal service. Performs primary duties of the dining room coordinator including the use of the dining access system when deemed necessary.

Cleans and sanitizes all Dining Service areas and equipment and small wares including routine floor maintenance on each shift. Supports and maintains proper sanitation and recycling procedures. Responsible for the routine cleaning and organizing of refrigerator, freezer. Assists Chefs in taking inventories.

Receives food. Properly verifies and stores food and supplies. Rotates food stored in a first in, first out system. Utilizes leftover food properly to ensure safe product handling and effective food cost control. Also responsible for accurately labeling foods on salad bars and will assist in adjusting preparation to dietary accommodations.

Communicates with all people accurately, professionally, and in a timely manner, including labeling and dating foods. Reports any discrepancies with food deliveries or unacceptable quality issues to Cook on duty. Collaborates with Chef to plan salad bar presentation and communicates amount of food returned to kitchen after meals in order to assist in food purchasing/production efficiency. Responsible for accurately labeling foods on salad bar. Works cooperatively with the Area Manager, staff, and students to ensure an orderly and efficient operation. Responsible for reviewing and understanding all departmental notices. Utilizes e-mail and all college computer access responsibly.

Attends departmental meetings and training workshops as requested. Participates in the preparation and service of special events, as needed. Completes required payroll forms and scheduling forms within stated or established deadlines. Performs all other related or relevant tasks. Initiates teamwork, collaboration, and cooperation between co-workers.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience: Completion of high school education or vocational school education plus 1 year of combined educational and/or commercial experience in quantity cookery; current state approved sanitation certificate is required. Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing and perform basic arithmetic functions. Preferred: Culinary Arts training.

Skills: Must be able to tolerate exposure to water and cleaning chemicals, higher than normal noise levels, and heat and humidity consistent with that produced by commercial kitchen equipment. Must demonstrate adequate physical strength and coordination to effectively prepare, clean and receive supplies while properly utilizing standard food service utensils and equipment. Must be able to safely lift and move 50 pounds, work from a step stool, walk and stand for prolonged periods of time, bend, reach, pull and push. Must also be able to manipulate utensils and equipment repetitively for variable periods of time - up to 70% of an assigned shift. Must be mobile between kitchen and dining areas and other campus food service areas. Must possess good vision, the sensory ability to taste/smell and must practice good personal hygiene and wear clean uniforms in compliance with public health standards and consistent with college policy.

Schedule for these positions vary 32 or 40 hours per week for 39 weeks per year. 11:30 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. or 6:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Wage Rate - $19.67per hour.
