Job Description Summary:

BASIC FUNCTION:

Develop, assemble, and operate autonomous floats for oceanic research on the biological carbon pump. Primary role will be software and firmware development, PCB assembly and design as needed to support specific projects related to the floats. Float ballasting and sea-going activities related to deployment and recovery will be required.

Duties and Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Development of software as needed to fulfill specific project objectives.

Development of hardware as needed to fulfill specific project objectives.

Ballasting and other preparations as needed before research cruises.

Assist with routine and emergency maintenance as needed. Fabrication of equipment as required.

Assistance with shipping logistics as required.

Be available for routine and emergency work nights and weekends.

Travel and work at sea may be required in the performance of the duties of the position.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Perform additional duties as required.

LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:

Personal computers, CAD modeling, PCB design, 3D printing, machine tools, database management and spreadsheet software.

Required Qualifications:

REQUIRED:

1.Master’s degree in a science, engineering, or other technical field with a minimum of three years’ experience in a science, engineering, or other technical field, OR, Bachelor’s degree in a science, engineering, or other technical field with a minimum of four years’ experience in a science, engineering, or other technical field.

2.Demonstrated experience with autonomous equipment in the at-sea and shipyard environment.

3.Demonstrated experience ballasting equipment in pressurized vessels.

4.Demonstrated experience in underwater acoustics.

5.Demonstrated experience troubleshooting equipment under field conditions.

6.Demonstrated leadership skills in a science, engineering, or other technical field.

7.Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.

8.Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.

9.Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively (particularly in a training/Research & Development environment).

10.Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

PREFERRED:

1. Master’s Degree in Ocean Engineering.

Environmental Conditions:

This position is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions. Environmental conditions will occasionally include those typical of a ship underway.
