Overview and Responsibilities

The Academic Advisor assists students in making informed decisions about academic matters including advisement on programs, admission, registration, financial aid, and related topic areas. This position supports administration, the Student Services team, and instructional staff and reports to the Director of Advising and Services.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic advising to current students regarding programs of study, program qualifications, course content, course selection, prerequisites, recommended course load, advanced standing process, registration, and graduation.
  • Meet with new and continuing students to provide information and advisement to students regarding programs, registration, financial aid, waiting lists, and related topic areas.
  • Assist incoming students with the admissions process.
  • Assist other enrollment management functions to ensure successful matriculation and retention of students including assessment, advisement, admission, orientation, and registration.
  • Respond to student concerns/problems by advising or referring students to appropriate College resources.
  • Inform new and continuing students about the services and resources available at the college to help them be successful as a student at CVTC.
  • Assist students in developing academic plans to achieve desired goals.
  • Evaluate transfer credits and advise students regarding transferability of courses to and from CVTC.
  • Assist students with degree audit process; refer to faculty, registrar, and academic deans when appropriate.
  • Resolve student questions or concerns on academic policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Coordinate and conduct group advisement sessions for new and continuing students.
  • Answer questions and provide correct information to continuing students regarding when to register and resolves issues regarding incorrect time-tickets for students.
  • Assist students in complying with administrative and program requirements such as scheduling, registration, and course withdrawal.
  • Meet with students after they complete Health Education Systems Incorporated (HESI), ACCUPLACER, and/or Inventory of Student Success (ISS) assessments.
  • Assist students with student record processing and procedures (graduation audit, R-list, FAQs with course scheduling, program requirement sheets, course selection, and documented substitutions, etc.).
  • Assist students in accessing career instruments and job placement technologies.
  • Assist with Career Services mailings, career fair events, and information.
  • Refer students to CVTC student success specialists when appropriate.
  • Provide leadership in marketing CVTC programs, facilitating effective student matriculation through assessment, and vocational advisement.

  • Thorough knowledge of College resources and the ability to identify resources appropriate to the students for success at CVTC.

  • Ability to complete and keep accurate student records.

  • Advanced knowledge of and skills with technology including software programs for communication, data collection, and decision making including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office Outlook, Word, and Excel and integrated database applications (e.g. Banner).
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Education, Vocational Rehabilitation, School Counseling, Higher Education, Mental Health Counseling, or related field.
  • Minimum of two years of related experience in a student services area; including experience administering assessments.
  • Post-secondary experience preferred.
  • Spanish or other bilingual capabilities advantageous.
