Job Summary Fields/Discipline: Machine Learning-based Thermo-Fluids Systems Design, Analysis, and Optimization Job Description/Requirements:Seeking an aerospace or mechanical engineer with a strong background in the design, analysis, and optimization of thermo-fluids systems using machine learning-based techniques. The candidate must demonstrate a strong background in multifidelity and multidisciplinary analysis techniques for aerospace systems in industry standard software suites such as StarCCM+, OpenMDAO, StanfordUnstructured, and NPSS, among others. As part of his or her responsibilities, the applicant is expected to conduct, lead, and publish research involving the development of state-of-the-art machine learning and reduced order modeling techniques applied to aerospace-related thermo-fluid systems, development of digital-twins as well as water and energy systems or sustainability related topics. The candidate must have at least 2 years of experience in thermo-fluid system design and analysis. Experience in multidisciplinary optimization, modeling and simulation of thermo-fluid systems, design parameterization, and automation is a must. At least 2 years of hands-on experience through development on actual engineered systems or equivalent is desired. In addition, a minimum of 2 years of experience in statistical methods for data processing applied to engineered systems is a must. The skills include uncertainty quantification, design of experiments (DoE), machine learning techniques (e.g. Deep Neural Networks, Gaussian Processes), parametric reduced order modeling (intrusive and non-intrusive), and multi-fidelity approaches with applications on practical engineered systems. Experience in using and developing integrated design and analysis environments (either from in-house developed software/tools, industry-standard tools, or some combination thereof) is desired (Python preferred).A minimum of 1 year of management experience is required. The applicant will be responsible for managing and coordinating projects. This includes coordinating all communication with sponsors, meeting deadlines and scheduling milestones, writing proposals, and supervising integrated teams composed of graduate/undergraduate students and professionals. Version control (using Git and GitHub), automated testing, code review, and other tool development management skills are desired. Furthermore, the applicant will work with his/her division chief to develop leads for sponsored research project and engage in exploring collaboration opportunities with government agencies, academia, and industry. A certain level of outreach to participate in technical committees, working groups, and academic societies is therefore expected. The applicant must also be prepared to offer course lectures, lab sections, or invited talks. Hence, excellent written and oral communication skills are a requirement. Experience in effective teaching, constructing successful business opportunities, and developing/patenting technologies is highly desired.Job (Day-to-Day) Duties:
- Research-oriented Tasks
- Perform relevant and thorough literature survey on topics related to modeling, simulation, and optimization or aerospace thermo-fluids systems
- Identify problems and formulate solution concepts
- Utilize and expand problem-solving experience in the fields of multidisciplinary system design, as well as multi-fidelity modeling and simulation
- Implement engineering tool solutions and perform relevant case studies
- Contribute to engineering tool development by
- Using industry-standard practices, tools, and codes
- Exploring and implementing appropriate modeling and simulation tasks
- Implementing fundamental data analysis and statistical methods
- Using state-of-the-art data/model-driven predictive methods to augment modeling and simulation tasks
Required Qualifications
- A Master’s degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree,
- A Master’s degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor’s degree, or
- A Doctoral degree.
Preferred Qualifications
- A Doctoral degree
