Job Summary

This position will support the production of braille text from the Braille Media Services unit. Duties will include using skills in digital media production to scan, manipulate PDF files, and troubleshoot printing files. The specialist will operate and maintain an inventory of equipment which includes embossers, bursters, custom punches, riveters, choppers, and scanners to assemble bound braille texts. This position will interact on a regular basis with: Digital Projects Specialists and the Braille Production Manager. This position typically will advise and counsel: AMAC Managers for Productions, BrailleThis position will supervise: NA

Responsibilities

Job Duty 1 -
Emboss, burst, and bind Braille to fulfill student/customer orders; reproduce tactile graphics using a thermoform machine

Job Duty 2 -
Perform AMAC (Accessibility Solutions and Research Center) production procedures to create Alternative Media files for students with print disabilities; including but not limited to, chopping, scanning, and OCR (Optical Character Recognition)

Job Duty 3 -
Order supplies and maintain the equipment for the production workflow

Job Duty 4 -
Prepare braille texts for shipping

Job Duty 5 -
Add information to the AMAC Wiki pertaining to the production standards and workflows

Job Duty 6 -
Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
High school diploma, GED Certificate or Vocational School Diploma

Other Required Qualifications
Student Life on Call emergency response rotation: availability to respond to calls after hours 1-2 weeks a semester (6 times a calendar year).

Required Experience
One to two years of job related experience

At least one Braille Certification such as Nemeth, Music, and Proofreading Skills preferred for this position include previous experience with thermoforming, bursting and binding Braille pages; familiarity with Braille embossing equipment including embossers, bursters, binders, and thermoform machinery; familiarity with at least one of the mainstream Braille transcription software packages such as Braille 2000, Duxbury Translation Systems, MegaDots, etc; ability and experience with providing tactile graphics in at least one of the acceptable methods such as collage, swell, or computerized graphics; previous experience with ABBYY Finereader and desktop publishing applications

Preferred Educational Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Business or related field

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

SKILLS
This job requires the ability to perform under pressure and multitask while maintaining a high level of organization and professionalism; working knowledge of relevant accessibility standards; excellent customer service and communication skills; knowledge of file formats including PDF, HTML, Microsoft Word, and other publishing formats, ability to use a database entry/tracking system, effectively troubleshoot daily issues/problems with minimum supervision, maintain equipment and perform repairs after sufficient training.
