Nature of Work

Principal Professionals are responsible for exercising discretion, analytical skill, personal accountability and responsibility in a wide range of areas including academic, administrative, managerial and student services functions. Work involves creating, integrating, applying and sharing knowledge directly related to a professional field. Work is performed at an advanced or expert level. 

Principal Professionals are either work leads over others or are considered a subject matter expert in a particular area.

Example of Work Performed
The Greene Laboratory at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus seeks an IT Principal Professional to work under the direction of the lab director to serve as the subject matter expert and support analysis of large-scale genomic datasets and the development of webservers that make these capabilities available to biologists with limited computational expertise. The types of responsibilities will include:

  • Design, develop, and maintain bioinformatics tools and pipelines that assist in the analysis of large-scale biological datasets using vendor-supplied, and open source programs
  • Design, develop, and maintain web servers for other users to access data and bioinformatics tools
  • Manage experimental annotations and analysis results for above
  • Participate in code review
The software engineer within the Greene lab will work with the lab director to establish priorities for software development, design solutions, and lead the development of these solutions. The responsibilities for this position include: designing software for analysis of large datasets, implementing these solutions, optimizing these solutions so that they can be effectively scaled to production workloads, and leading a team to fully implement these solutions. The software engineer will recognize that requirements may change during development as users identify additional or distinct desired capabilities and will be adaptable to these changes. This individual will be the primary lab subject matter expert ensuring that the developed solutions are robust, responsive, and scalable.

Salary and Benefits:
The hiring range for this position begins at $67,254 and is commensurate with skills and experience.

This position is not eligible for overtime compensation.

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:

  • A bachelor’s degree in computer science, management/computer information systems, engineering, information technology, or a related field. 
  • 3 years experience building websites and applications
  • 2+ years experience building single page applications with web development frameworks such as React (w/ React Hooks) and Vue.js
Substitution: A combination of education and experience may substitute for the bachelor’s degree on a year-for-year basis. 

Required: Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with JavaScript, HTML, CSS and responsive design for web apps on mobile and desktop
  • Experience with JavaScript state management libraries such as Redux or Vuex
  • Experience using D3.js to develop interactive, data-driven visualization
  • Experience with graphic desig
  • Experience using Figma or other design software to create pixel-perfect, wireframe mockups
  • Familiarity with testing utilities such as Jest for testing applications and components
  • Experience using code formatting tools like ESLint
  • Experience testing and deploying front-end software with continuous integration (GitHub Actions, etc)
  • Experience deploying production websites using static site generators (Jekyll, etc)
  • Experience using the Git version control system
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Ability to reduce complex functionalities that support the biological sciences into simple, intuitive, clearly organized user interface designs
  • Strong grasp of UI and UX design principles
  • Knowledge of SVG
  • Familiarity with testing utilities such as Jest for testing applications and components
  • Knowledgeable in modern software development practices. Highly motivated, have ample technical curiosity, have strong interpersonal skills, and be able to contribute in a positive manner to the collegial atmosphere of the laboratory and the department.  Be able to conduct independent software development, and mentor more junior lab members.
