The Gates Center for Regenerative Medicine has an opening for a full-time Process Engineer (I/II) for the Protein Development and Manufacturing team. The Gates Biomanufacturing Facility is an academic cGMP manufacturing facility dedicated to the development and manufacture of novel biological therapies for early phase human clinical trials. This position will be responsible for leading process development and manufacturing tech transfer activities related to protein-based therapeutics at the Gates Biomanufacturing Facility. This individual will also design and execute protein production processes in the process development and manufacturing suites for Phase I manufacturing.

Job Responsibilities

    Significant independent contributor to:
    Tech-transfer of (E. coli protein) processes from client to development to manufacturing Scale-up of multiple (protein) manufacturing processes for the cGMP suitesCapital, facility and equipment upgrades and projectsIdentify and/or confirm required materials for manufacturing processes
    Lead manufacturing activities for multiple unit operations, including E.coli fermentations, cell lysis and inclusion body preparation, purification by liquid chromagroaphy and alternate methods, chemical and pressure refolding as well as formulation/development by tangential flow filtration. Includes the operation of Sartorius Biostat Fermenters (5 – 50 L scale), Sartorius TFF systems (Slice and Sartoflow) and/or AKTA Purification Systems (Pure and Pilot)Author master batch records, production and tech transfer reportsLead CAPA implementation, process qualification/validation and/or process robustness assessments, facilities and equipment
    Mentor teams to meet project expectations related to timelines, budget, and quality
    Provide exceptional communication and customer service to users of the facilityPrepare and present technical data and processing information to clients, as necessary
    Work in a professional and collaborative manner with coworkers and prospective users

QualificationsMinimum Qualifications: 

    Master’s Degree (in Bioengineering, Chemical Engineering or a relevant field) + minimum 3 years’ relevant experience or equivalentSignificant (protein-related) manufacturing or process engineering experienceExcellent knowledge of GDP, GLP and/or GMP
Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

    Subject matter expert in a process, manufacturing and/or analytical development areaE. coli based protein process development, including fermentation, refolding, chromatography, tangential flow filtration
Experience with process design, controls and/or equipment and facility designExperience with Process Flow Diagrams, Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams, User Requirements Specifications, Technical Specifications, Functional SpecificationsMentoring experienceKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Excellent written and oral communication skills  A team-oriented, self-starter capable of operating independently in a start-up environment
