Job Description:

The Department of Neuroscience is seeking candidates with expertise in managing and maintaining animal husbandry for rodent work to support Dr. Benoit Giasson in the Center for Translational Research in Neurodegenerative Disease (CTRND). This Laboratory Technician II position will include animal genotyping, harvesting tissue, and behavior assays.

Specific responsibilities to include:

  • Organize and maintain several transgenic mouse lines, which includes establishing breeding colonies, careful inventory, administering special feed when necessary, ensure optimal animal health, and keep close observation of peculiar behaviors and phenotypes that may arise from drug treatments.

  • Expected to work with other members of the lab to assist them with treatments before and after procedures, post-surgical care, and accurate identification of each mice, which could be essential for double blinding mouse cohorts in a study.

  • Perform animal genotyping, harvesting tissues, behavior assays, generating primary neurons, drug delivery (via oral gavage, intraperitoneal injections, among others), intracranial surgeries, P0 injections, and processes as assigned.

  • Maintenance of laboratory equipment, reagent preparation, proper disposal of chemicals/ biological material, cleaning glassware, overall general maintenance, and other duties as assigned.

  • Assist with lab training for graduate students and explain new procedures as needed.

Expected Salary:

$15 to $18 per hour

Minimum Requirements:

Associate's degree in an appropriate area and two years of related experience; or a high school diploma or equivalent and four years of related experience. Appropriate college course work or vocational/technical training may substitute at an equivalent rate for the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

4 years’ experience working with animals, preferably rodents.
