Minimum Qualifications:

Requires technical knowledge in the field acquired through an apprenticeship, a 2-year degree, or professional certificate. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

Position Summary:

This position will work with a Principal Investigator to conduct research in biological oceanography for a 12-month period and is renewable on an annual basis contingent upon satisfactory performance and availability of research funding. Responsibilities will include the assisting of the daily operations of the Frischer Molecular Ecology Laboratory and participating in ongoing grant-funded laboratory and field research including participation in oceanographic research cruises.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies:

Degree with major coursework in a related field.

Relevant research experience.

Knowledge of basic laboratory skills.

Knowledge of reagent preparation and axenic sterile culture techniques.

Knowledge of nucleic acid purification and quantification.

Knowledge of PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction).

Knowledge of gel electrophoresis, and other complex molecular biology and biochemistry assays. (omics analysis skills preferred).

Knowledge of Microsoft Office Software (Excel, Powerpoint, Word).

Ability to understand and interpret scientific information (data and technical manuals).

Ability to work independently.

Physical Demands:

Capable of sea-going activities related to coastal oceanographic data collection.

Work in a variety of conditions, climate controlled and outdoor environments.

Support the daily operation of the laboratory including ordering and tracking materials and supply inventories, laboratory safety, and laboratory waste management.

Percentage of time:



Performance of a range of technical analyses largely focused on nucleic acids (DNA, rRNA, and mRNA). Routine maintenance of algae and other cultured organisms.

Data and record keeping and basic data analysis. Participate in the preparation of manuscripts, reports, and grant proposals.

Assist with and provide supervision and training to undergraduate students, graduate students, and research associates in all aspects of the ongoing research.
