Position Highlights:

The Career and Professional Advisors at the University of Arizona College of Medicine-Phoenix are dedicated to supporting our medical students throughout their four years in a variety of capacities that are important to their success in medical school, residency, and specialty careers.

Medical students and their respective Advisors have two structured meetings annually. Agenda items at these meetings are specific to each of the four years. Each medical student is assigned an Advisor to work with throughout his or her four years. The ongoing relationship that develops over the four years is important to our culture and mission.

The Career and Professional Advisor will implement and maintain the Career Advising System within the Office of Student Affairs, supporting the Associate Dean of Student Affairs (ADSA). The Career Advising system focuses on a developmental approach to medical student competency assessment, as well as integrated longitudinal medical student support for medical specialty selection, career development, and residency application. The advisors will also deliver the 4-year AAMC Careers in Medicine curriculum to all students. The number of advisees and responsibilities will vary by level of FTE assignment.

Note: This position cannot evaluate students or be involved in student promotion.

The FTE for this position is to be determined. This position is available up to a full 1.0 FTE depending on clinical responsibilities with our Affiliate Hospital.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Director of Advising in the organization, implementation and delivery of the Careers in Medicine curriculum.
  • Collaborate with external faculty and program directors to compile various data and resources as they relate to medical
    student career advising.
  • Scholarly work as a faculty member.
  • Identify and develop faculty specialty mentors to assist with student career decisions and/or the residency application
  • Manage and monitor student competency issues, formulate competency action plans, and escalate student advising issues to the Director of Career and Professional Advising and as needed, Associate Dean, Student Affairs.
  • May be responsible for developing and leading committees as appropriate.
  • Maintain communication and meet individually with his/her assigned students at least.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • M.D. or D.O.
  • Board certified.
  • Active AZ medical license or eligible to obtain an AZ license.
  • History of working with medical students and/or residents.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

• M.D.

• Primary Care physician.

• Recent history of working with medical students and/or residents.

• Previous experience in advising medical students, particularly around professional. development, competency advancement, and/or specialty selection.

• Recent history of involvement with the residency selection process/ERAS/NRMP.

• Previous experience with career advisement with medical students and/or residents.

• Experience with professional competency assessment and evaluation.

• Knowledge of the University of Arizona College of Medicine – Phoenix.
