The University System Office seeks an Associate Director of Reach & Development Programs. The Discovery Partners Institute provides a platform for people to jumpstart their tech careers or companies in Chicago. Led by the University of Illinois System in partnership with local and global research universities, DPI does two things: tech talent development and applied R&D. DPI prepares students and workers to step into high-demand tech jobs. It also builds research teams helps them to identify and pursue new funding opportunities. With state investment and a new urban innovation district in development just south of the Chicago Loop, DPI has the resources to attract, develop and leverage the most ambitious people and companies the region has to offer - and keep them here.

The Associate Director of R&D Programs will establish and implement project management timelines and systems in the DPI R&D Unit. This role will ensure submission of high-quality research proposals by supporting grant writing and overall proposal development, work with DPI Science Teams to plan and coordinate pre and post award activities, and manage awards, compliance and reporting for funded projects. This is a leadership position in the R&D unit, that involves working with the DPI Research Director and Science Teams to develop, manage and support a growing research operations infrastructure.

Additional responsibilities include:

Duties:
  • Provide project management for research unit activities.
  • Coordinate proposal development efforts including, but not limited to, managing timelines, planning and writing, acquiring supporting documents and data, proposal drafting, editing.
  • Research sponsor requirements prior to proposal development and manage compliance and reporting through post award.
  • Work with science teams to plan and execute activities.
  • Coordinate and manage events such as workshops, symposia, and lectures.
  • Identify and inform Science Team Directors about funding opportunities.
  • Connect Science Teams with DPI and University supports and resources that strengthen proposals and research activities.
  • Collaborate with research staff across the University and DPI academic partners.
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as needed.
Qualifications:

Candidates must possess a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a DPI science team area or closely related area (Masters or PhD preferred) with a minimum of 5 years of sponsored research operations/project management experience. Grant writing experience required. Other qualifications include: experience supporting STEM and/or computing related research strongly preferred; experience with supporting interdisciplinary teams and team science strongly preferred; familiarity with academic research and/or industry R&D strongly preferred; experience with research proposal development strongly preferred; exceptional oral, written, interpersonal and organizational skills; experience working with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, across institutions, and across disciplines.
